Beacon Scavenger Hunt Returns to CES 2016

Hunt showcases new and emerging technologies across the CES floor

LAS VEGAS--()--In addition to exploring the latest tech trends and witnessing the launch of thousands of new, innovative products and services, CES® 2016 attendees can participate in a beacon-based Scavenger Hunt to explore the world’s greatest technology event and compete for special prizes. Owned and produced by the Consumer Technology Association (CTA)™ – formerly the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA)® – CES is the world’s gathering place for all who thrive on the business of consumer technologies, and will run January 6-9, 2016, in Las Vegas, NV.

Attendees with the official CES App on iOS or Android devices will have the opportunity to earn Scavenger Hunt “badges” by exploring key areas of the show. All Scavenger Hunt locations will be powered proximity beacons and services that will trigger participants’ mobile apps when they are near a Hunt location. Detailed Scavenger Hunt instructions are included in the CES App.

The first three players who collect all of the available badges will be rewarded with digital cameras from Activeon and Panasonic. The prizes will be delivered to the verified winners following CES 2016. A limited number of prizes will be available on site for others who complete the Hunt throughout the week. Participants who complete the Hunt and wish to claim a prize must report to the Press Room at the Las Vegas Convention Center (LVCC), South Hall Connector, Room S229, during normal operating hours.

“The Scavenger Hunt is back,” said Jeff Joseph, senior vice president of communications and strategic relationships at CTA. “Beacon technology has taken off since we first used it at the 2014 CES. Using proximity beacons to drive a Scavenger Hunt is in line with our show mission – to promote innovation and showcase the latest in emerging technologies. Plus, it’s just a fun way to encourage participants to visit important exhibits across the show floor.”

Beacons are short range, low-energy transmitters that can notify mobile devices when they come within a pre-defined range of the beacon. This micro-location, proximity awareness can be leveraged to deliver a wide range of new, innovative solutions, such as precision indoor navigation, automatic ticketing, guided tours and location-relevant offers and promotions.

CTA is again partnering with its member company Radius Networks, Inc, a leading provider of mobile proximity services, to implement the Scavenger Hunt as well as indoor navigation and end-user messaging at CES 2016. The devices being used for the CES scavenger hunt are Radius Networks' RadBeacon proximity beacons, the industry’s first multi-beacons, providing concurrent support for multiple proximity technologies, and seamless proximity services across iOS, Android and other emerging mobile environments.

“Throughout our partnership with CTA, we have been able to demonstrate the latest in proximity beacon technology at CES,” said Marc Wallace, CEO & cofounder of Radius Networks. “This year, we are demonstrating enhanced indoor navigation, the Scavenger Hunt and proximity-based ‘right-time, right-place’ messaging around the show.”

Top prizes include an Activeon CX Gold action cam and Panasonic’s LUMIX G7 4K Mirrorless Interchangeable Lens Camera.
