SHELTON, Conn.--()--William Raveis Real Estate hosted its first annual community fundraising event to benefit the Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation. The Raveis Ride + Walk was held in Hingham, Massachusetts at Derby Academy, and Fairfield, Connecticut at Jennings Beach.

The family and community event included a 25-mile ride, 12-mile ride, and 5K walk at both venues. The Massachusetts and Connecticut Ride + Walk events brought together over 550 participants and volunteers and raised $550,000 in total. 100% of the proceeds went to the Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation.

The Fairfield Ride + Walk was followed by a post-ceremony to honor local cancer survivors and Damon Runyon scientists who have dedicated their lives to finding a cure for cancer. Post-event activities followed with food from Vazzano’s Four Seasons Catering, face painting, music a dunk tank and a raffle. Children of all ages participated in a 100 yard kid’s dash on the beach.

In January 2015, William Raveis Real Estate announced the William Raveis Charitable Fund was broadening its reach to include support for all types of cancer. William Raveis Real Estate partnered with the prestigious Damon Runyon Cancer Foundation. The Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation identifies the most brilliant, young cancer researchers, and provides them with funding to pursue their ideas in search of new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat all forms of cancer.

“We exceeded even our own expectations in how much we could raise for Damon Runyon Cancer Research in this first year,” said Meghan Raveis, Managing Director of the William Raveis Charitable Fund. “This speaks volumes about the potential for reach that the company has. We will continue to passionately pursue our efforts to eradicate cancer.”

William Raveis Real Estate has participated in and funded several organizations, including the American Cancer Society, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Hope Lodge, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and the Normal F. Pfriem Breast Care Center over the years.

The William Raveis Charitable Fund is planning a series of community events throughout the Northeast to raise awareness about the importance of cancer research and funds for Damon Runyon.

“The Damon Runyon scientists are making extraordinary steps forward in understanding how to tackle cancer, and we’re proud to support them with the money we have raised. Working with Damon Runyon will enable us to make a difference for those who are affected by cancer now and in the future,” says Bill Raveis, Chairman and CEO of William Raveis Real Estate. “They have a unique approach focusing on rising stars capable of thinking outside-the-box. That’s exactly what we need in cancer research.”

Since 1946, Damon Runyon has invested over $287 million in the best young minds in the nation. Their alumni include 12 Nobel Laureates and leaders of major cancer centers across the United States. Many of their more than 3,460 scientists have gone on to make breakthroughs in the way we prevent, diagnose and treat many forms of cancer. Additionally, 100% of the donations to the Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation fund cancer research.
