UCSF Orthopaedic Institute Finds Disposable, Plastic Spine Instrument by Xenco Medical Outperforms Metal Counterpart

SAN DIEGO--()--The UCSF Orthopaedic Trauma Institute has released its findings from a comparative strength study involving a disposable, plastic spinal instrument by Xenco Medical and an exact counterpart made from aluminum metal. The strength study, which was performed at UCSF, found that the plastic lumbar instrument by Xenco Medical significantly outperformed aluminum metal in maintaining structural integrity. The report by UCSF states “At 40mm of cantilever deflection, the composite polymer instrument showed no visible fracture while the aluminum instrument exhibited significant deformation.”

The UCSF strength study highlights the durability of Xenco Medical’s spinal instruments, all of which have been engineered from a highly reinforced, composite polymer. The load was applied continuously at a rate of 25mm/min and the force and displacement were recorded throughout the UCSF study. The first of their kind, the disposable, plastic instruments by Xenco Medical eliminate any chance of infection due to reused, improperly sterilized instruments. Unlike medical instruments that are used until an unexpected mechanical failure, the instruments by Xenco Medical ensure that every patient is operated on with instruments functioning at their peak condition.

“The exceptional performance of Xenco Medical’s instrument in the UCSF study reinforces the overwhelmingly positive feedback we have received from across the country,” said Xenco Medical CEO Jason Haider.

The disposable, plastic spinal instrument tested by the UCSF Orthopaedic Trauma Institute serves as one of the components of the company’s increasingly comprehensive, entirely disposable Cervical and Lumbar spinal systems. In strength studies, Xenco Medical’s lumbar instruments have withstood over 450 Newtons of force without any fracture or deformation. Xenco Medical’s surgical portfolio is comprised of entirely sterile-packaged implants and instruments. Xenco Medical, which was first adopted for use by the UCLA Spine Center on July 13th of this year, has expanded its distribution to five states since July.
