TAIPEI, Taiwan--(BUSINESS WIRE)--An international seminar held by the Academia Historica (國史館), marking the 70th anniversary of the victory over Japan in the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937-1945) and Taiwan's retrocession, was recently concluded in Taipei.
The seminar, titled "War in History and Memory: An International Conference on the 70th Anniversary of China's Victory in the War of Resistance against Japan," has successfully gathered over 200 scholars and experts from Taiwan and abroad to discuss the war of resistance against Japan.
They discussed the war from domestic and international perspectives and offered historical interpretations of the conflict, Taiwan's retrocession, Academia Historica Director Lu Fang-shang (呂芳上) said.
The three-day seminar held in early July was jointly organized by Academia Historica, Academia Sinica's Institute of Modern History, and the National Palace Museum.
Scholars from the United States, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, South Korea, India, Australia, the People's Republic of China and Hong Kong and domestic scholars participated in the historic significance of the war and its military, political, economic, social, cultural, ethnic, and nation-building implications, according to Lu.
The event was not meant to extol war but to highlight the theme of pursuing peace through war, Lu said.
Through the review of the history of the war and the battleground in China, Lu said, Academia Historica hopes to showcase the ROC's long-term contributions to the international community and its pursuit of peace and regional stability.
Meanwhile, representatives of museums and exhibition halls that have historical materials related to the war, including the USS Battleship Missouri Memorial in Hawaii, the London-based Imperial War Museum, and the Museum of the Polish Army in Warsaw, have displayed their collections during the seminar, Lu said.
Meanwhile, the Academia Historica has held a book release event in July to launch a number of books, diaries, historical materials and documents related to the war, Lu said.
