NEW YORK--()--As families embark on their annual summer vacations, a new travel survey conducted by ExpertFlyer.com uncovered surprising data about consumer trends and behaviors among families traveling together. Regarded as the premier air travel information resource for business travelers and frequent flyers, ExpertFlyer conducted the survey with more than 1,100* consumer-based travelers subscribing to its free Seat Alerts app to discover behaviors and what affects family travelers most. The results, which have been used to develop an infographic, were quite interesting.

Among the key survey highlights:

  • 45% of respondents said airline mile redemption was a deciding factor in taking a family vacation
  • 75% said they “stole” overhead bin space that wasn’t theirs
  • More than 1/3 of those polled said they brought their own food to eat on the plane
  • 72% of family travelers have either booked a non-traditional vacation accommodation or would consider it, such as hostels or home and apt rentals (via services, like Airbnb, Flipkey or Homestay)

In addition, the survey discovered the most popular travel apps, ultimate vacation destination wishes, and top things that stress-out family travelers the most.

Experts were asked to weigh in on specific sections of the survey results, including credit card and airline rewards authority, Jason Steele, who commented on single travelers and couples’ ability to effectively redeem award travel tickets vs. families.

“It’s not easy to score an upgrade and it’s even more difficult to fly free on rewards points,” explains Steele. “While single travelers and even couples have a respectable shot at finding award seats, families are going to be challenged. Since the odds of finding three or four award travel tickets on the same flight are highly unlikely, many people, after several failed attempts, simply stop trying.”

“The goal of this survey was to gain a better understanding of consumer trends to better service customers moving forward and hopefully provide the travel industry, in general, with some insight about how to service families planning their vacation,” said Chris Lopinto, president and co-founder of ExpertFlyer.com.
