Hagens Berman Investigating Deadly Medical Scope Superbug Outbreak at Seattle’s Virginia Mason Hospital

Law firm seeking information after outbreak infects 32 and kills 11

SEATTLE--()--Hagens Berman is investigating Seattle-area hospital Virginia Mason after a deadly superbug found in the hospital’s endoscopy medical scopes infected 32 individuals and killed 11 between 2012 and 2014 – one of the nation’s largest outbreaks of its kind. Reports state that Virginia Mason failed to notify patients and their family members about the outbreak until only recently. Hagens Berman is seeking information from those who have been affected.

The Seattle outbreak involved strains of multidrug-resistant E. coli bacteria. According to reports, Virginia Mason chose not to inform patients or family members that they were involved in an outbreak linked to the tainted duodenoscope, a type of endoscope placed down the throat and into the intestinal tract.

“When just one patient loses a life from an drug-resistant superbug, it’s time to act. Unfortunately, Virginia Mason chose to delay their outreach, leaving the growing number of affected patients and their families in the dark,” said Steve Berman, managing partner of Hagens Berman. “We see this behavior as irresponsible and think that those who have suffered from this outbreak would agree.”

According to the Seattle Times, patients and their families learned of the outbreak through a Seattle Times story in January of 2015.

Seattle-based Hagens Berman has a long track record of representing Seattle-area residents in litigation ranging from personal injury lawsuits to product defects to environmental hazards.
