TransCore’s Canadian Freight Volumes Deliver Slim Gain for October

TORONTO--()--While TransCore Link Logistics Canadian Freight Index was flat in October, increasing just one percent from September, year-over-year volumes continue to break records, jumping 21 percent compared to October 2013.

Cross-border load volumes for October averaged 69 percent of the total.

  • Loads leaving Canada to the United States vaulted 70 percent year-over-year.
  • Loads into Canada improved 14 percent year-over-year.

Intra-Canada load volumes represented 26 percent of the total volumes for October and rose 22 percent year-over-year.

Of the total volumes within Canada for the month of October:

  • Loads into western Canada increased to 37 percent, up from 33 percent in September.
  • Loads into Ontario decreased to 34 percent, down from 37 percent in September.
  • Loads into Quebec and into Atlantic remained consistent compared to September.

Although equipment postings increased seven percent for the month of October, annual postings dropped six percent from October 2013. The equipment-to-load ratio increased to 2.03 from 1.92 in September. This marks the first time in 10 months that the equipment-to-load ratio exceeded a full two trucks for every one load available in the system.
