Parents Want Technology to Track their Children

AUSTIN, Texas--()--Parents want to know where their child is in real time – and they want technology to help.

According to a new study, 72 percent of Americans said they want to know where their child is located in real time. That’s a key finding from the study’s creators, The Center for Generational Kinetics and Wearables.com.

The brand-new research shows that 44 percent of Americans want a smart watch to feature technology that does the job of tracking their children. 39 percent want a smart watch to alert them instantly if their child dials 911.

“These results mean that added ‘trust but verify’ absolutely applies to parenting. As a father myself, I get why parents responded this way,” said Jason Dorsey, founder and chief strategy officer for The Center for Generational Kinetics. “What’s interesting about the results is that there’s a demand for the technology to be delivered via a smart watch. That’s a real opportunity for companies like Apple, Samsung and Google, as well as traditional watch makers like Rolex and Fossil.”

Those who would like to buy smart technology are likely to want to know where their child is in real time, as shown by the percentage of people who both want to buy a particular wearable and know where their child is in real time:

  • 82 percent for smart watches
  • 82 percent for wearable cameras
  • 80 percent for activity trackers
  • 73 percent for smart glasses

It’s not surprising that 36 percent said they're willing to put a GPS watch on their child so they know where he or she is in real time. What is surprising is that 22 percent would put a fitness tracker on their child to know how much activity he or she is getting, such as how many steps are taken – implying they want to know if their child is getting enough exercise.
