QUINCY, Mass.--()--Granite Telecommunications, LLC, a provider of communications services to businesses, announced that it has donated $200,000 to ALS charities as part of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. It did so after more than 1,000 Granite employees, as well as family members and organizations from the Quincy community, participated in a company-wide “icing.”

Granite CEO Rob Hale, Jr., last week challenged his employees to participate and in turn, pledged $100 to ALS for each staff member that accepted the challenge. Employees stepped up to the plate, participating in a mass dunking at the company’s headquarters on August 18.

“Granite has a history of encouraging employees to participate in charitable acts, and this latest is a testament to their commitment to helping others,” Hale said. “We are so proud of our employees who volunteered for this campaign to help Granite do its part to raise awareness for ALS. It is my hope that other companies take on the cause.”

Granite has been named repeatedly as one of the most philanthropic companies in Massachusetts. In addition to the donation to ALS, Granite has given nearly $30,000,000 to more than 200 different community organizations. Back in February, over 435 Granite employees shaved their head to raise money to help defeat cancer.

Hale doubled the amount of the company’s initial ALS pledge in honor of Corey Griffin, who passed away tragically last weekend after helping Granite organize the ALS event. The crowd held a moment of silence for Griffin and Hale acknowledged the Griffin family, who attended the event. Both Hale and John Frates, father of Pete Frates, recalled Griffin’s dedication to raising awareness and finding a cure to beat this terrible disease.

Hale took the popular Ice Bucket Challenge a step further by calling out his friend, Jay Hooley, CEO of State Street Corporation. Hooley has accepted Hale’s challenge.
