Rovi Unveils Remote Access Services to Allow Connected Guides to Control Legacy Set-Top Boxes

Adds to Comprehensive Range of Powerful Rovi Cloud Services for Advanced Entertainment Discovery and Monetization

2014 International CES

LAS VEGAS--()--Rovi Corporation (NASDAQ: ROVI), a global leader in entertainment discovery, today introduced Rovi Remote Access Services, a new component of its Rovi Cloud Services that are designed to allow service providers and authorized third-party developers to create applications for Smart TVs, phones, and tablets that can control legacy cable set-top boxes. The first capabilities of the new services are to be Remote Tuning and Remote DVR, which can allow advanced guides on connected devices — including Smart TVs, tablets and smartphones — to control standard set-top functions including channel navigation and DVR management.

“We are laser-focused on helping our customers create dynamic and more personalized ways for consumers to discover and enjoy entertainment across multiple screens,” said Michael Buchheim, senior vice president of product management, Rovi. “An important element of this process — and for creating smarter home environments in general — is to form a communication gateway between connected devices and legacy, disconnected set-top boxes that handle core functions like tuning, security and recording. Our latest cloud services are designed to further this effort, allowing providers to offer advanced and intuitive ‘connected’ guides that can communicate with legacy set-top boxes that provide the primary screen experience.”

Delivered as open APIs, Rovi Remote Access Services are designed to give service providers a cost-effective path to transition to a more agile and interactive IP-enabled infrastructure. Using in-house development teams or third-party development partners, service providers can deploy advanced discovery experiences with integrated controls for changing channels and setting or cancelling DVR recordings, all within an advanced connected guide. While initially being used for real-time control over standard set-top box functions, Rovi Remote Access Services could be expanded to offer additional remote capabilities including DVR playback and access to an operator’s VOD catalog.

Rovi Remote Access Services will join a comprehensive range of services from Rovi available via the cloud that includes Rovi Data, Search, and Recommendations Services, which can be used to create unique entertainment discovery experiences as well as drive content promotion. Also part of Rovi Cloud Services will be Rovi Advertising Services that enable providers and app developers to generate new and recurring revenue streams by integrating advertising into their applications and user experiences.

Rovi plans to host private meetings and product demonstrations for industry executives during the CES tradeshow in Las Vegas, January 7-10 at Caesars Palace. Rovi is collaborating with Dijit, developer of the NextGuide, a discovery and engagement product line, to showcase a live demonstration of Rovi Remote Access Services. Invited attendees can also view additional Rovi services and technologies driving entertainment discovery and monetization and learn first-hand how Rovi works with leading brands to help them deliver personalized experiences and unlock the full value of their entertainment offerings.
