Quick Fixes for Common Washing Machine Problems

MEMPHIS, Tenn.--()--American Home Shield, the nation’s leading provider of home warranties, is helping consumers solve common problems with washing machines by offering a variety of troubleshooting tips as part of its popular “Home Matters” YouTube video series.

According to company officials, appliance-related service requests – such as those for washing machines – are growing faster than any of the other trades covered by its home warranties. That includes heating and air conditioning, plumbing, electrical, pool and spa, and more. The company’s home warranties cover repairs to major appliances and system components that break down due to normal wear and tear.

“We’re seeing a combination of factors at play,” said Dave Quandt, American Home Shield’s vice president of field services. “In today’s economy, consumers are watching their budgets carefully. In many cases, they’re holding onto major appliances like washers and dryers longer, and as equipment ages, it’s naturally more subject to breakdowns. At the same time, newer equipment often has sensitive electronics that can more easily fail.”

In the “Troubleshooting Advice for Common Washing Machine Problems” video, viewers learn how to identify causes of common problems associated with washing machines.

  • If your washer won’t operate:
    • Check your electrical box for a blown fuse or tripped circuit breaker to make sure it is getting power.
  • When the washer turns on, but doesn’t fill with water:
    • Make sure that the water shutoff valve is completely open.
    • Check the hot and cold inlet hose filters and clean them if they need it.
    • Straighten the water-supply hoses to make sure there are no kinks that could be blocking the water flow.
  • If you are still having problems:
    • Turn the timer slightly, and press the buttons more firmly.
    • If these tips don’t solve the problem, call a qualified professional.

Along with this washing machine repair video, nearly 20 topics are included in the popular “Home Matters” series, which include troubleshooting tips as well as preventive maintenance reminders and easy, do-it-yourself fixes for common problems with major home systems and appliances.

American Home Shield’s “Home Matters” series is hosted by David Leon, a licensed contractor and national home improvement television personality. Consumers can go to www.YouTube.com/TeamAHS to view these and a variety of other home-related videos.
