Nutter to give keynote address at Peirce College’s 148th Commencement Ceremony on June 10, 2013

PHILADELPHIA--()--Peirce College, Philadelphia’s leading private, non-profit, four-year accredited institution for working adult learners, is proud to announce that Philadelphia First Lady Lisa J. Nutter will deliver the keynote speech at the 2013 Commencement Ceremony on Monday, June 10, 2013.

“Ms. Nutter’s commitment to providing educational opportunities and resources for Philadelphia students directly aligns with Peirce’s mission of making higher education accessible and attainable to all. Her dedication to academic advocacy is a perfect fit for our career oriented, non-traditional student body. We are honored that she has accepted our invitation,” said James J. Mergiotti, President & CEO of Peirce College.

Ms. Nutter serves as President of Philadelphia Academies, Inc., a non-profit youth development organization working in Philadelphia public high schools to provide career-based learning experiences that motivate young people to stay engaged in school. The ultimate goal is to expand life and economic options for these students and set them on a positive path.

“At Peirce, we strive to inspire our students to use their academic achievements to make a difference in their communities and workplaces. In light of that, we are thrilled to send our graduating class off with words of wisdom and inspiration from Ms. Nutter, as her experience and passion embody that mission,” said Patricia Rucker, Senior Vice President, Academic Advancement & Provost at Peirce College.

“The majority of our student body and graduating class are working adult students who enrolled at Peirce to take advantage of our career-focused degrees and services. We know Ms. Nutter’s speech will further motivate our graduating class to be lifelong learners and show their friends and family that a college degree is achievable,” continued Rucker.

Ms. Nutter holds a B.S. in Psychology from The Pennsylvania State University and an M.A. in City Planning from the University of Pennsylvania. She is actively engaged both locally and nationally in issues related to social change and youth development. She currently serves on the board of directors of the Women’s Community Revitalization Project and Big Picture Philadelphia. She also serves on the Advisory Council for the Pennsylvania Conference for Women.

Peirce College’s 148th Commencement Ceremony will take place in Verizon Hall at the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia.
