Freescale Announces Pin-Compatible, Power-Efficient Series in New QorIQ Communications Platforms

New P1 and P2 Families Use 45-nm Technology and e500 Cores to Deliver Unprecedented Performance at Very Low Power

AUSTIN, Texas--()--Freescale Semiconductor introduces the first two product series based on its new QorIQ Communications Platforms for next-generation multicore networking applications. The P1 and P2 platform series include Freescales first communications processors based on 45-nm technology. Utilizing the e500 Power Architecture® core, these devices offer a multicore migration path for PowerQUICC® II Pro and PowerQUICC III processor customers.

The QorIQ P1 and P2 platform series consist of dual- and single-core products that are pin- and software-compatible with each other, offering five interchangeable, cost-effective solutions. The P1 platform series includes the P1020, P1011 and P1010 communications processors, and the QorIQ P2 series consists of the P2020 and P2010 communications processors. From a single core at 400MHz (P1010) to a dual core at 1200MHz (P2020), the P1 and P2 families offer a broad frequency range within a pin-compatible package.

All devices in these two platforms share the e500 Power Architecture core and are fully software compatible with existing PowerQUICC processors, making it easy for customers to migrate to QorIQ platforms while preserving their software investments. This enables customers to create products targeting multiple performance points from a single board design. The dual core members of the QorIQ P1 and P2 series (P1020 and P2020) support symmetric and asymmetric multi-processing, thereby enabling performance scaling through either thread-level or application-level parallelism.

The first products in Freescales new QorIQ platform series are designed to help customers quickly migrate to a multicore environment while maintaining a single core power budget, said Jeff Timbs, director of strategic marketing for Freescales Networking Systems Division. Our P1 and P2 platforms enable customers to transition from single- to dual-core with significant performance gains while keeping power extremely low.

QorIQ P1 Communications Processors

The P1 family is built with very low-power, dual (P1020) or single (P1011 and P1010) 800 MHz Power Architecture e500 cores and includes 256-Kbyte L2 cache with error correcting codes (ECC) to offer a value-based solution. Providing a migration path from Freescales popular PowerQUICC II Pro processor family, the P1 series offers a performance upgrade in the same power envelope, which enables fan-less design, as well as a migration path to dual-core if required for increased performance. The series provides solutions for the 400 MHz to 800 MHz per core performance range, along with advanced security and a rich set of interfaces.

With a scalable platform, these P1 devices can be used in a range of applications such as multiservice gateways, Ethernet switch controllers, wireless LAN access points and high-performance general-purpose control processor applications with tight thermal constraints. The products are well-suited for various combinations of data plane and control plane workloads for applications such as networking and telecom line cards. They also have the right level of performance and interface combinations to easily support printing and storage applications.

QorIQ P2 Communications Processors

The P2 platform communications processors deliver dual core processing performance in a single core power budget. With dual and single e500-based cores (P2020 and 2010) ranging from 800 MHz to 1.2 GHz, the P2 series offers a compelling migration path for existing PowerQUICC III processor users. The P2 series has a 512-Kbyte L2 cache with ECC that may be partitioned between cores and is also configurable as SRAM and stashing memory. In addition to four advanced Ethernet controllers with advanced packet parsing, flow control, quality of service features, and IEEE 1588 time-stamping, four SerDes lanes can be portioned across two Serial RapidIO ports, three PCI Express ports and two SGMII ports. The 64-bit SDRAM controller supports both DDR2 and DDR3 for future-proofing against memory technology migration, and it supports ECC, a check-off item for any high-reliability system. Other interfaces include SPI, USB, SD/MMC flash support, a DUART, a local bus, and dual I2C.

The QorIQ P2 platform products serve in a wide range of applications, especially networking and telecom line cards and base station channel cards with constrained thermal budgets. The ability to run two copies of an operating system leads to decreased down-time and the ability to upgrade software on the fly. This enables increased reliability, as does ECC on the memory controller. Dual Serial RapidIO interfaces align with the backplane and DSP interconnects being used in base stations. Additional applications which benefit from this integration and performance include unified threat managers, carrier-class VoIP media gateways and wireless media gateways.

Availability

The first members of the P2 series are expected to sample to lead customers in Q4 2008, with beta samples scheduled for Q1 2009. The first members of the P1 series are expected to begin sampling in 2009. Contact Freescale for pricing.
