Jimmy Dean Kicks off 'National Hot Breakfast Month'

Dishing out First-Ever List of Americas 'Best Breakfast Cities'

More than one-third of Americans enjoy waking up to a hot breakfast; San Diego leads the morning charge while Sacramento sleeps-in on the breakfast front

DOWNERS GROVE, Ill.--()--Jimmy Dean®, America's favorite traditional breakfast, announced today the results of a nationwide survey to identify America's Best Breakfast Cities - the cities where people are most likely to begin their day with breakfast. Revealed in celebration of National Hot Breakfast Month in February, the survey showed that more than one-third of Americans enjoy waking up to a hot breakfast.

Conducted with Zogby International, the survey analyzed the breakfast habits of more than 6,000 people living in 25 major U.S. cities. With more than 70 percent of San Diegoans waking up to enjoy breakfast each morning, America's Finest City tops the list as Americas Best Breakfast City. Another California city, Sacramento, came in last with 14 percent of people forgoing breakfast and only 46 percent making it a part of their regular daily routine. Also ranking at the bottom of the list is Orlando, Fla., where 11 percent of people skip out on breakfast and 46 percent eat it regularly.

Additional survey findings include:

  • Sin City makes breakfast a family affair - 37 percent of Las Vegas families eat breakfast together everyday placing it at the top of the list; Atlanta ranked last with only 7 percent of families sitting down to eat breakfast at the same time
  • Breakfast clocks-in at San Francisco offices - San Franciscans are more likely to eat breakfast at their desks (33 percent) than people in any other major U.S. city including New York (20 percent); 11 percent nationally
  • Breakfast goes mobile - nearly one in every five people in Dallas (20 percent) regularly eat their breakfast on-the-go (in a car, on a train, etc.)
  • Breakfast after dark - nearly 50 percent of Americans typically eat breakfast foods during the dinnertime or evening hours
  • Grown-up breakfast not for kiddies - 20 percent of people with children choose to eat different breakfast foods than their kids

The survey also looked at breakfast preferences and how they vary on a regional basis. More than one-third of Americas breakfast lovers enjoy waking up to a hot, traditional meal. Interestingly, people living in Phoenix and Sacramento, Calif. where temperatures are high year-round, were among the places where warm breakfast is most popular. Eggs and egg sandwiches are a favorite breakfast choice for more than one-third of all survey respondents, closing ground on top-ranked cereal.

Everyone seems to know that breakfast is the key to getting a great start to your day, however our survey revealed that some U.S. cities are better than others when it comes to making breakfast a part of their daily routine, said Philippe Schaillee, vice president of breakfast and snacking for Sara Lee North America Retail. With mornings being one of the most hectic times of the day, many families go without their favorite breakfast foods until the weekend - but this does not have to be the case. At Jimmy Dean, we understand that convenience shouldn't mean sacrificing a hot breakfast and what better time to let everyone know the importance of beginning their days with a Happy Breakfast than National Hot Breakfast Month.
