Carnegie Learning is an education company committed to giving math teachers the simplest, most flexible path to research-proven results.

PITTSBURGH--()--Carnegie Learning announced today that EdReports.org has published a new report, giving the Carnegie Learning High School Math Solution top marks across all three gateways. Last year, the Carnegie Learning Middle School Math Solution also received near-perfect scores from EdReports. A ranking this high for both Middle School and High School blended offerings is unprecedented.

Demand for high-quality materials is a growing movement in K-12 education. As such, companies that deliver best-in-class instructional content are uniquely positioned to improve math learning, which continues to be a national struggle. According to the Nation’s Report Card, 66% of 8th-grade students did not perform at or above the Proficient level in mathematics in 2017.1 Carnegie Learning, a dynamic, progressive learning technology company, aims to fill the gap left by traditional publishers and open educational resource (OER) providers by combining the highest quality instructional materials with the most powerful AI-driven tutoring software available.

EdReports.org is an independent nonprofit that evaluates instructional materials for quality and standards alignment. It is a gold-standard leader in helping teachers and administrators to identify the highest-quality instructional materials. A recent article published in The 74 asserts that “EdReports is disrupting the $8 billion [textbook adoption] industry by putting teachers in charge.”2 EdReports Founding Executive Director Eric Hirsch told EdWeek Market Brief, “We have heard, unsolicited, from over 500 districts that have utilized our reviews as they’ve selected and implemented materials. That represents over 7.6 million students. More than three-quarters of a million unique visitors have accessed our reports.” EdReports.org uses review tools that have been developed by expert educators from across the country, and each report represents hundreds of hours of work by educator reviewers.

Best-in-Class Ratings across Both Middle School and High School Blended Math Offerings

The Carnegie Learning High School Math Solution met EdReports’ expectations in all three gateways:

  • Focus & Coherence — Are the instructional materials focused on the right content at each grade level, and is it presented in a coherent way?
  • Rigor & Mathematical Practices — Do the materials have the right mix of conceptual understanding, procedural skills, and applications to address the standards to their full depth? Do they help teachers build productive habits of mind in their students?
  • Usability — Do the materials have the right support in place for teachers to use them effectively?

According to EdReports, the Carnegie Learning High School Math Solution is “coherent and consistent with the high school standards that specify the mathematics which all students should study in order to be college and career ready." It also “meets the expectations for rigor and balance by reflecting the balances in the Standards and helping students meet the Standards' rigorous expectations.”

The Carnegie Learning Middle School Math Solution, which was reviewed by EdReports in 2018, also received top marks, including perfect scores for Focus & Coherence and Rigor & Mathematical Practices. EdReports.org found the three aspects of rigor—conceptual understanding, procedural skills and fluency, and application—to be “fluidly interwoven” throughout the materials.

The EdReports.org review process is a rigorous one. In fact, many other curriculum solutions do not pass the first and second gateways and are therefore not evaluated for the third. Schools and districts can therefore choose the Carnegie Learning Math Solution with confidence, knowing that it has met the highest quality standards in addition to having been proven effective through third-party efficacy research. Top-Quality Instruction and an Award-Winning 1-to-1 Digital Math Coach for Every Student

Carnegie Learning intentionally designs its products to accommodate student learning in two types of environments: learning together and learning individually. There are times when students benefit from working together with their peers, discussing the math, building deep conceptual understanding, and developing productive habits of mind and 21st-century skills. Students also need time to individually solidify knowledge, practice, and gain necessary procedural fluency.

The Carnegie Learning High School Math Solution blends those two experiences through the student text and MATHia®, an artificial intelligence (AI) software product that mirrors a human coach better than any other platform. In 2019 alone, MATHia has already won four industry awards for its AI technology.

Built on Decades of Research and Real-World Classroom Experience

The Carnegie Learning instructional approach is built on decades of work by cognitive learning scientists and master practitioners. In addition to the blended solution, Carnegie Learning Master Math Practitioners deliver practical strategies, first-hand insights, and smart professional learning that helps teachers shift their mindset, deepen content knowledge, and create student-centered learning environments where everyone thrives.

“We are very proud to receive such high ratings for all of our blended math solutions,” says Barry Malkin, CEO of Carnegie Learning. “Teachers and students deserve quality materials, and our team works tirelessly to ensure that our curriculum, software, and professional learning services are the best in the business.”

“We’re very thoughtful and intentional in developing our instructional materials,” says Sandy Bartle Finocchi, Chief Mathematics Officer at Carnegie Learning. “We spend a lot of time thinking about the mathematics and making sure it’s coherent and connected. We believe that all students should have access to this kind of math learning, and we work with teachers every day to bring it to life in their classrooms.”
