GREENSBORO, N.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--UnitedHealthcare is providing Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina with a $2,500 donation, nutritious food and fruit, and three refrigeration units that will enable food pantries to preserve and distribute healthy, fresh food to underserved communities.
With more than 340 food deserts across 80 counties in the state, limited access to nutritious foods is a major issue statewide and particularly in the Triad. UnitedHealthcare has partnered with organizations like the Second Harvest Food Bank to reduce food insecurity across North Carolina and help people live healthier lives.
“We are grateful for this donation from UnitedHealthcare,” said Clyde Fitzgerald, executive director, Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina. “This support will further enhance our efforts to provide nutritious, fresh food options to underserved communities in North Carolina.”
The $2,500 donation will provide 17,500 meals to families and children as part of Second Harvest Food Bank’s Summer Meals Program, and the new refrigeration units will be used in food pantries in Forsyth and Guilford counties to stock fresh fruits, vegetables, eggs and dairy products.
“Our partnership with Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina will help address a significant health issue in our state,” said Anita Bachmann of UnitedHealthcare. “Food deserts affect the overall health of North Carolinians, making it difficult for people with limited mobility or access to transportation to get the nutritional foods they need to lead a healthy lifestyle.”
Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina is committed to reducing hunger and malnutrition in northwest North Carolina through advocacy, education, partnerships and food distribution. In fiscal year 2013-2014, the organization distributed more than 25 million pounds of donated, purchased and prepared foods, the equivalent of more than 20 million meals for 200,000 adults and 100,000 children.
UnitedHealthcare serves more than 1 million people in North Carolina with a network of 140 hospitals and more than 25,000 physicians and other care providers statewide.
