TransCore’s Canadian Freight Volumes Recede in November

TORONTO--()--TransCore Link Logistics Canadian Freight Index fell in November, declining 11 percent from October. This drop was offset by two fewer shipping days and the U.S. Thanksgiving holiday. Year-over-year volumes were still impressive, growing 19 percent compared to November 2013.

Cross-border load volumes for November averaged 70 percent of the total.

  • Loads leaving Canada to the United States jumped 52 percent year-over-year.
  • Loads into Canada grew 12 percent year-over-year.

Intra-Canada load volumes represented 25 percent of the total volumes for November and increased eight percent year-over-year.

Of the total volumes within Canada for the month of November, western Canada saw the most significant regional shifts in load volumes:

  • Loads into western Canada increased to 41 percent, up from 37 and 33 percent the previous two months.
  • Loads into Quebec decreased to 21 percent, down from 26 percent in October.
  • Loads into Ontario and into Atlantic remained consistent compared to October.

Equipment postings decreased 12 percent compared to October. Annual postings fell eight percent from November 2013. The equipment-to-load ratio decreased to 2.01 from 2.03 in October and from 2.62 in November 2013.
