ORLANDO, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--At the conclusion of the first year of a four-year longitudinal study, researchers at Stanford University’s Annenberg Institute National Student Support Accelerator found that 68% of students who participated in 1:1 high impact tutoring from Chapter One met or exceeded end-of-year early literacy benchmarks, compared to 32% of students in the control group. Chapter One high impact tutoring is an ESSA (Every Student Succeeds Act) Tier 1 evidence-based intervention.
The study — one of the largest randomized control studies of the impact of 1:1 tutoring on beginning reading skills — was launched in Sept. 2021 in 40 classrooms across 13 schools in Broward County Public Schools (BCPS). More than 800 kindergarten students were randomly assigned to either a treatment group that received Chapter One’s tutoring or a control group that received only regular classroom instruction.
BCPS is the second largest school system in Florida and sixth largest in the country, with 55% of students qualifying for free or reduced meals. Chapter One’s program in BCPS is one of the nation’s largest implementations of high impact tutoring for beginning reading, serving over 12,000 students in the 2022-23 school year.
“We have seen the impact of the Chapter One programs in the percentage of students meeting grade level expectations in reading and the overall average growth in reading over the year,” said Dr. Lori Canning, executive director of family and community engagement for BCPS. “Comparison studies of students with and without a Chapter One tutor have highlighted the significance of their work and the difference a tutor can make.”
Chapter One’s early learning interventionists (ELIs) work with students 1:1 in the classroom, and one ELI can serve multiple classrooms in a school. ELIs use Chapter One software to conduct tutoring sessions, which enables them to simultaneously instruct and assess student performance. Because sessions are short in duration, there is minimal disruption to classroom instruction. The tailored focus of the instruction makes it affordable at scale across a school district, and aligns with all beginning reading programs.
