Illustrative Mathematics Celebrates 10th Anniversary and the Release of the Complete IM K–12 Math Curriculum

TUCSON, Ariz.--()--Illustrative Mathematics (IM) celebrates two major milestones in 2021: its 10th anniversary and the nationwide release of the complete, standards-aligned IM K–12 Math curriculum certified by Illustrative Mathematics.

IM was founded in 2011 at the University of Arizona and has operated as an independent 501(c)3 nonprofit organization since 2013. IM’s vision is to create a world where all learners know, use, and enjoy mathematics.

Working toward that vision, IM launched IM 6–8 Math in 2017, then released IM 9–12 Math in 2019 and IM K–5 Math in 2021. IM K–12 Math is a problem-based core curriculum that is used by 1.3 million students and 24,000 teachers in 1,100 school districts across the United States. It provides an engaging, inclusive approach that lifts students up to skills, understandings, and practices that will stay with them for a lifetime.

To meet the diverse needs of K–12 districts, IM Certified Distribution Partners offer IM Certified curricula via a freely available open educational resource (OER) option, as well as through enhanced digital platforms and print formats for a fee. The IM Certified designation guarantees the curriculum is authored, reviewed, and updated by IM, and has the rigor, structure, and coherence as developed by the IM authors.

IM also offers professional learning that is deeply integrated with the curriculum. To date, more than 14,000 educators have participated in IM K–12 Math professional learning certified by Illustrative Mathematics.

“I am proud of this 10 year milestone for Illustrative Mathematics,” said Dr. William McCallum, Illustrative Mathematics’ CEO and co-founder. “Even more, I'm excited to move into our next phase, which is cultivating the IM Classroom — a classroom model which propels us beyond curriculum.”

The IM Classroom is a model classroom where teachers and students use the IM curriculum, teachers participate in IM’s professional learning, teachers practice IM’s problem-based instructional model, and district administrators provide proactive support.
