GPA and Immedis Global Payroll Survey Reveals 71% of Organizations Rely on Excel for Payroll Processing and Data Analysis

Forty-four percent surveyed report using anywhere between 5 to 101 vendors to manage global payroll operations

DUBLIN, Ireland--()--Immedis, the leader in consolidated global payroll solutions, today announced the results of the 2021 Global Payroll Survey conducted in partnership with the Global Payroll Association (GPA). A key finding of the survey revealed that manual processes are still prevalent in the global payroll operations of many organizations, with 71% percent surveyed saying they frequently use Excel within payroll processing and data analysis. Another key finding demonstrates the complexity many organizations face with 44% reporting they use anywhere between 5 to 101 vendors to manage global payroll operations.

“Our joint research with the GPA contains many insights we think will be of interest to payroll leaders,” said Ruairi Kelleher, CEO of Immedis. “The findings about Excel usage are especially interesting. With more than 71 percent saying they’re still using Excel for payroll processing and data analysis, it’s evident there’s work to be done to accelerate the adoption of automated solutions that save organizations time and money, improve payroll accuracy, and ensure the security of payroll information.”

Melanie Pizzey, CEO of the GPA added, “The study reveals some encouraging signs, for example 39% surveyed reporting payroll close dates of under six days for all payroll inputs and data changes. But it’s clear that some organizations are still burdened with payroll operations complexity, which can hinder performance. Many organizations said they’re currently using a large number of payroll vendors, dozens in some cases. This can add layers of complexity to payroll operations and data management, increasing the chances of payroll errors and delays.”

Conducted in Q1 2021, the joint research study consisted of an online survey of 206 payroll professionals, 75% with titles of payroll manager of higher. Fifty-five percent of survey respondents represent organizations of more than 2,500 employees or more, with 62% reporting a presence in 11 countries or more.

The survey covers four key focus areas: Global Payroll Operations & Vendor Relations, Technology, Payroll Data Access and the Employee Experience.
