Alation Named One of Inc. Magazine’s Best Workplaces 2021

Company’s quick shift to creatively engage and support fully remote workforce earns high scores

REDWOOD CITY, Calif.--()--Alation Inc., the leader in enterprise data intelligence solutions, has been named to Inc. magazine’s annual list of the Best Workplaces for 2021. The list is the result of a wide-ranging and comprehensive measurement of American companies that have created exceptional workplaces through vibrant cultures, deep employee engagement, and stellar benefits, whether teams are operating in person or remotely.

Alation employees participated in the magazine’s survey, conducted by Quantum Workplace, which provided insights on topics such as trust, management effectiveness, benefits, confidence in the company’s future, and fostering employee growth. Inc. magazine then gathered, analyzed, and audited the results to complete its list.

Alation’s total score averaged 91 out of 100, with nearly 98% of employees noting they are engaged with the company. When questioned about benefits provided, Alation scored substantially higher (20 points) than the overall average of companies of similar size in the region.

“When the pandemic hit, my team knew we needed to keep our ears and hearts open, and learn from and lean into our most valuable asset, our employees. It was critical to keep them top-of-mind and adjust old processes and practices that would better support them, starting with our new Work from Anywhere policy,” said Joy Wolken, Chief People Officer of Alation. “It’s an honor to be recognized and validated for the success of our employee engagement efforts by both Inc. Magazine and our amazing Alationauts. We are growing rapidly and our entire leadership team is committed to ensuring Alation is a great place to work, now and in the future.”

One of the ways Alation supported employees during the worldwide pandemic was through its “Alation’s Guide to Staying Sane,” which addressed personal topics like isolation, working at home with children, and depression, among others. Using this resource, Alation executive team members also hosted small-group listening sessions to ensure employees felt seen, heard, and understood. In turn, these sessions allowed the leadership team to better understand employee concerns and what the organization was doing right, and identify ways to improve.

As the pandemic continues, Alation is committed to supporting the wellbeing of its employees and their families. The company is providing India-based employees with additional, family-first time off in the event an employee or a family member is exposed to the virus, stay-at-home medical kits and a subsidy for COVID-specific medical needs, mental health apps and virtual counseling, and isolation center reimbursement for those who need to isolate and have difficulty doing so in their current home situation. Additionally, all Alation employees are encouraged to participate in a 30-Day Playful Rebellion Challenge to break down the core virtues of a playful mindset, connect with, and cheer on fellow co-workers.

“The definition of a positive workplace has changed drastically over the past year,” says Inc. magazine editor-in-chief Scott Omelianuk. “Stocked fridges and nap pods were no longer perks many companies could rely on once work went remote. So, this year’s list is even more important as it reveals organizations that continue to enrich the lives of its employees amid a pandemic.”
