Prospero Health Appoints Dr. Kris Smith as Chief Clinical Officer and Dr. Theresa Soriano as Associate Chief Clinical Officer

Strategic senior hires strengthen Prospero’s clinical leadership

BOSTON--()--Prospero Health, a physician-led home-based medical care provider that supports over 12,000 people facing serious illness, recently announced the hiring of two nationally recognized home-based medical care leaders: Dr. Kris Smith serves as Chief Clinical Officer and Dr. Theresa Soriano serves as Associate Chief Clinical Officer. Dr. Smith and Dr. Soriano join an expanding team that supports patients across 26 states with an innovative care model that combines in-home medical care with enhanced virtual capabilities and 24/7 telemedicine support for people living with serious illness.

“Dr. Smith and Dr. Soriano understand that health care has typically been organized around the customs of the health care system, as opposed to the needs of patients and families,” said Doug Wenners, co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Prospero. “They have embraced Prospero’s model of providing care to people whenever and wherever they need it because the patient-first model has served as their life’s work. We are fortunate and grateful to have them on our team.”

Board certified in Internal Medicine and Hospice and Palliative Medicine, Dr. Smith came to Prospero from naviHealth, where he served as President of its Home-based Medical Care division and oversaw the organization’s efforts to establish a national network of home-based medical care practices. Prior to naviHealth, Dr. Smith was the Senior Vice President of Population Health at Northwell Health, where he provided population health strategic leadership and oversaw all care management activities. Before joining Northwell, Dr. Smith was a clinical researcher, assistant program director, and clinician at the Mount Sinai Health system. In 2015, he was recognized as ‘House Call Educator of the Year’ by the American Academy of Home Care Medicine. At both Mount Sinai and Northwell, his clinical work consisted of house calls to frail, homebound seniors as part of nationally acclaimed home-based medical care programs.

Dr. Smith graduated with a degree in sociology from Princeton University and a Master of Public Policy in health policy from Harvard University. He received his Medical Degree from Boston University School of Medicine and completed his residency at the Mount Sinai Medical Center, where he served as a chief resident in Internal Medicine.

“I believe the only way suffering can be reduced in complex populations is through the creation of excellent clinical programs delivered by teammates imbued with purpose and drive,” Dr. Smith said. “There is no more noble calling, and that calling led me to Prospero.”

Dr. Soriano is the current President of the American Academy of Home Care Medicine (AAHCM) and is also a board certified internal and palliative medicine physician. She is a Clinical Professor at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Most recently, Dr. Soriano served Cityblock as its first Northeast Chief Health Officer. Prior to Cityblock, Dr. Soriano was Director of Mount Sinai’s Visiting Doctors Program from 2008-2015, and later held executive leadership roles in hospital operations and population health within the Mount Sinai Health System. In 2009, she was named American Academy of Home Care Medicine’s House Call Physician of the Year, and in 2012 she earned the Hastings Center-Cunniff Dixon Physician Award for Excellence in Palliative Medicine.

Dr. Soriano earned her undergraduate degree in Human Development from Cornell University, and she later received her MD and MPH from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. She completed her residency in Internal Medicine at Jackson Memorial, part of the University of Miami system.

“By providing comprehensive, interdisciplinary medical care in the home, Prospero is addressing a glaring need for overlooked people in this country,” Dr. Soriano noted. “I am thrilled to join a team that truly believes care should be decided by the patient and their loved ones, not by the circumstance of their illness or environment.”
