ANSAN, South Korea--()--Sensor Electronic Technology, Inc. (“SETi”) and Seoul Viosys (KOSDAQ: 092190), the leading global providers of UV LED technology and subsidiaries of Seoul Semiconductor, announced the development of a portable surface disinfection unit, the “Photon Stand,” as a new Violeds UV-C LED technology application.

Designed to disinfect COVID-19 occurrence areas, such as hospital rooms contaminated by infectious patients, or other locations, such as schools and children’s day-care centers, the Photon Stand surface disinfection unit kills more than 90% of viruses and bacteria within 10 minutes. Seoul Viosys and SETi will promote both the Photon Stand surface disinfection unit for OEM manufacture, as well as the Violeds UV-C LED technology to medical equipment manufacturers across global markets.

The Photon Stand surface disinfection unit is the latest application of Violeds technology, Seoul Viosys’ patented UV-C LED photon solution that has been demonstrated to disinfect multiple types of bacteria and viruses. The Seoul Viosys BIO research team has confirmed that the Photon Stand disinfects more than 90% of viruses and bacteria within 10 minutes for a room up to 29.02m2, and 99% within 10 minutes for a room up to 13.84m2. The design of the Photon Stand is the result of dozens of studies of coronavirus disinfection done by Korea University and KR Biotech. Seoul Viosys has been operating its BIO research team for more than 10 years, staffed with Ph.D. and M.S. professional researchers in the biology field.

“The cost of operating the Photon Stand disinfection unit is less than 10 cents for an area of 15m2, which is the size of negative pressure (isolation) room used for infectious patients. (Cost was simulated using Violeds’ 50,000-hour lifetime.) This represents just 2% of the cost of chemical treatments ($4) required to disinfect the same size area. The Violeds UV-C LED modules used in the Photon Stand cost less than $500, meaning that the Violeds disinfection equipment for a large area is only 10% of the cost compared to systems using mercury UV lamps. Thus, Photon Stand reduces the cost of disinfecting equipment significantly,” said an official of Seoul Viosys.

The portable Photon Stand can disinfect a standard hospital room within 10 minutes. (Custom designs for shorter disinfection times are also available.) Because it can be moved easily, Photon Stand disinfects various areas efficiently and requires no extra cost or specialized labor for chemical removal and cleaning.

In 2025, UV LED market revenue is expected to reach $2.8 billion, as reported by Yole Développement, the leading compound semiconductor research firm. However, if new applications such as the Photo Stand portable disinfection unit are introduced, the market will expand.

“Chemical disinfectants used for sterilization of quarantine areas in multi-use facilities can be fatal to the human body or cause dermatitis and breathing difficulties if they are incorrectly used, or if residual substances are not properly removed after disinfection. However, UV light leaves no residue, unlike chemical disinfectants, and it disappears without a trace. Therefore, it is suitable for a wide range of medical and multi-use facilities,” said an official of Seoul Viosys.

Seoul Viosys has confirmed that Violeds technology disinfects 99.437% of the SARS-CoV-2 in one second, through tests with KR Biotech, a South Korea-based research institute specializing in sterilization testing for coronavirus. It has also been shown that design modifications can shorten disinfection time.

About SETi

Sensor Electronic Technology, inc. (SETi), a division of Seoul Semiconductor and Seoul Viosys, is a company based in Columbia, South Carolina, founded in 1999 by four Ph. D.s, for research and development of compound semiconductors in the United States. In 2005, SETi received the investment and R&D funding from Seoul Semiconductor and Seoul Viosys. For the development project, SETi is also working with the University of South Carolina and the University of California at Santa Barbara, adding depth to its research and development. Currently, SETi is the only company in the world that can produce UV LEDs from 200nm to 430nm. To learn more, visit http://www.s-et.com/en/.

About Seoul Viosys

Seoul Viosys is a full-line solution provider for UV LED, VCSEL (Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser), the next-generation light source for 3D sensor and laser, and a single-pixel RGB “Micro Clean Pixel” for displays. Established in 2002 as a subsidiary of Seoul Semiconductor, it captured the No. 1 market share in the UV LED industry (LEDinside, 2018). Seoul Viosys has an extensive UV LED portfolio with all wavelengths range (200nm to 1600nm) including ultraviolet rays (UV), visible rays and infrared rays. It holds more than 4,000 patents related to UV LED technology. Violeds, its flagship UV LED technology, provides a wide range of industries with optimal solutions for strong sterilization and disinfection (UVC), skin regeneration (UVB), water/air purification and effective cultivation for horticulture. In 2018, Seoul Viosys acquired RayCan, a leading optoelectronic specialist, to add the advanced VCSEL technology which supports smartphone facial recognition and autonomous driving, and has started its mass production. In January 2020, it introduced a disruptive “Micro Clean Pixel” that has the potential to be a game-changer in the display market. To learn more, visit http://www.seoulviosys.com/en/.
