Nebraska Office of Rural Health and The Chartis Center for Rural Health Recognize Outstanding Quality Among Nebraska’s Critical Access Hospitals

PORTLAND, Maine--()--The Chartis Center for Rural Health this week joined the Nebraska Office of Rural Health in honoring outstanding performance in quality among Nebraska’s Critical Access Hospitals. Presented during the virtual Nebraska Critical Access Hospitals and Rural Health Clinics Conference on Quality, the 2020 ”Rural Provider Excellence in Quality Award” recognizes Top 10 overall performance in quality utilizing the Hospital Strength INDEX® framework.

“Nebraska’s Critical Access Hospitals are among the nation’s best when it comes to quality, performing at the 92nd percentile,” said Michael Topchik, National Leader, The Chartis Center for Rural Health. “We are delighted to join the Nebraska Department of Health in recognizing this year’s Rural Provider Excellence in Quality Award winners.”

The INDEX is the most comprehensive and objective assessment of rural hospital performance and serves as the foundation for several rural recognition programs, advocacy efforts, and legislative initiatives. Now in its third year, the Rural Provider Excellence in Quality Award leverages the INDEX framework to analyze Medicare Beneficiary Quality Improvement Project (MBQIP) measures for the 64 Critical Access Hospitals in Nebraska. The analysis percentile-ranks performance for each facility across 24 equally weighted, core MBQIP metrics. Hospitals ranking in the top 10 are recognized with the Provider Excellence in Quality Award.

The 2020 Rural Provider Excellence in Quality Award recipients (in alphabetical order) are:

  • Brodstone Memorial Hospital
  • Callaway Hospital District
  • Community Medical Center
  • Crete Area Medical Center
  • Henderson Health Care Services
  • Howard County Medical Center
  • Jefferson Community Health Center
  • Memorial Community Health
  • Saunders Medical Center
  • Tri Valley Health System

“While this year has brought about unexpected challenges and a new reality for Critical Access Hospitals across Nebraska, the commitment to community and providing quality care has not wavered,” said Nancy Jo Hansen, Flex and SHIP Program Manager, Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services. “We are immensely proud to recognize the efforts of these 10 facilities who are setting the standard within our state for excellence in quality.”
