ROXBURY, Mass.--()--Horizons for Homeless Children, a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of young children and their families experiencing homelessness, will shine a light on diversity, equality and inclusion (DEI) at its annual Women's Breakfast (For Dinner) event on Thursday, October 29 at 7pm ET.

The ‘Breakfast for Dinner’ online evening will feature Angie Thomas, author of ‘The Hate U Give’—a powerful novel about one girl's struggle for justice, which has spent more than two years on The New York Times bestseller list and been made into a major motion picture.

Corporations and individuals have both been registering, recognizing this session is an opportunity to expand their knowledge and understanding in DEI topics. Proceeds from the event support the non-profit’s early education centers and its Playspace Program, which provide safe places for children to play and learn while the family is living in a homeless shelter. Additionally, Horizons’ Family Partnerships Program helps parents use their strengths to navigate the often frightening and frustrating terrain of homelessness.

“Racism is one of the root causes of homelessness, a truth we’ve known at Horizons for decades,” said Kate Barrand, president & CEO of Horizons. “As systemic racism continues to be a national discussion, it has brought a heightened awareness to our work, particularly where racial inequity intersects with our mission to serve families and children experiencing homelessness. While our annual Women’s Breakfast is normally in person, the virtual nature of this year’s event gave us the opportunity to put the discussion on a national stage. We are incredibly excited to have Ms. Thomas share her perspective with a broader audience.”

This year’s event will aim to further the national discussion around racial equity while supporting Horizons for Homeless Children, an organization that is countering systemic racism by empowering families of color every day and working to make a more equitable future for all via unique and dynamic support systems. Across the nation, the population of homeless children and families continues to grow, with more than 20,000 children under six experiencing homelessness each year in Massachusetts alone. 77% of the children Horizons’ serve are Black, Hispanic or Multiracial, according to their latest demographic report.
