DES MOINES, Iowa--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Principal Real Estate Investors has been honored as a 2020 Green Lease Leader, achieving Gold Recognition for the execution of its commitment to high performing and sustainable buildings.
Presented by the Institute for Market Transformation (IMT) and the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Better Buildings Alliance, the Green Lease Leaders program acknowledges landlords and tenants who modernize their leases to spur collaborative action on energy efficiency, cost savings, indoor air quality, and sustainability in buildings. Recipients must meet minimum criteria to be honored. Gold Recognition requires meeting two prerequisites and earning 5-out-of-6 possible credits for energy efficiency and sustainability best practices such as utility data tracking and sharing, cost recovery for capital improvements and sustainability training. All designations are valid for three years.
Principal Real Estate Investors exhibited compliance and implementation with both prerequisites and all six credits to earn its second consecutive Gold designation after first being awarded in 2017.

To set the standard for a green lease – also known as a high-performance or energy-aligned lease – the IMT and DOE Better Buildings Alliance collaborated with an industry advisory group of leading-edge landlords, tenants, brokers, and other green leasing experts. Their guidance helped inform the basic lease requirements of the Green Lease Leader recognition program, which was launched in 2014.
