The American Journal of Managed Care® Highlights New Directions in Immunization Awareness and Engagement

Two executives from the National Alliance of Healthcare Purchasers Coalitions lend perspective on the role of employers in promoting high-value preventive care.

CRANBURY, N.J.--()--The American Journal of Managed Care® (AJMC®), the leading multimedia peer-reviewed journal dedicated to issues in managed care, offers in-depth perspective on the value of immunization in the evolving health care landscape.

A recent supplement in the January issue explores pressing topics in immunization, such as the costs of vaccine-preventable diseases, the economic implications of immunization, and the role of health plans and employers in fostering vaccine engagement. The publication also features two interviews with leading experts from the National Alliance of Healthcare Purchasers Coalitions.

Michael Thompson, president and CEO, offers guidance and insight on the importance of employer health care advocacy and employee health, including immunization awareness and encouragement of patient-provider relationships.

“Immunization is not a stand-alone campaign; it’s part of a broader focus on improving health and well-being of employees, and the key is making the case that it’s a critical part of the overall portfolio of strategies that [employers] are trying to communicate,” Thompson said.

Bruce Sherman, M.D., FCCP, FACOEM, chief medical officer, discusses barriers associated with employers offering immunization services, including the participation rates of employers offering these services, as well as ways to better engage awareness.

“It’s not enough for employers to simply make immunization programs available to employees,” Sherman said. “Employers should also look at their actual participation rates in those programs.”
