CRANBURY, N.J.--()--The American Journal of Managed Care® (AJMC®), the leading multimedia peer-reviewed journal dedicated to issues in managed care, presents its most recent “Peer Exchange” panel discussion, “The Challenges and Treatment of Sickle Cell Disease.”

“Although there are some effective treatments that can minimize SCD symptoms and prolong life, our panel of experts, led by Dr. Neil Minkoff, will explore current treatment regimens and discuss other emerging therapies for the treatment of SCD,” said Michael J. This AJMC® “Peer Exchange” panel will feature four distinguished experts:

  • Neil Minkoff, M.D., former senior medical director, Harvard Pilgrim Health Care and founder of Fountainhead HealthCare, as moderator.
  • Maria Lopes, M.D., former chief medical officer, Magellan Rx Management.
  • John Stancil, R.Ph., pharmacy director, Division of Health Benefits, North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services.
  • Ahmar U. Zaidi, M.D., pediatric hematologist-oncologist, Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center, Children’s Hospital of Michigan.

The “Peer Exchange” will begin with an in-depth overview of SCD that defines the difference between sickle cell trait and SCD, as well as the genetic predisposition of SCD. Current treatment options for patients with SCD will be discussed, including the role of hydroxyurea in the pathophysiology of SCD, the mechanism of action of L-glutamine in treating SCD, blood transfusion therapy and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Challenges in the management of SCD will also be shared from a multitude of perspectives. Finally, a review of the emerging agents will be presented.
