Thousands of Comcast Employees to Volunteer at California Community Organizations During 18th Annual Comcast Cares Day

Volunteers Will Make Over 10,000 Paracord Survival Bracelets for U.S. Troops as Part of “Operation Gratitude”

LIVERMORE, Calif.--()--On Saturday May 4, 2019, more than 5,000 Comcast NBCUniversal employees, their families, friends and community partners will make change happen as they volunteer to improve California schools, homeless shelters and community organizations as part of the 18th annual Comcast Cares Day. This year, volunteers can sign up for more than 70 Comcast Cares Day projects taking place between April 1 and May 13, giving Comcast employees the opportunity to volunteer at projects throughout Northern California.

In addition, Comcast Cares Day volunteers will make more than 10,000 paracord survival bracelets and write letters of gratitude which will be sent in care packages to members of the United States Military as part of an initiative called “Operation Gratitude.” Each survival bracelet is hand woven by a volunteer using cords that can hold 550 pounds. It can be deployed in five seconds and reconstructed in one minute. Each bracelet will include a personalized message of support for U.S. troops deployed overseas.

Comcast Cares Day is more than just a day – it is an illustration of the spirit of volunteerism that Comcast employees bring to life each and every day. From using technology to create positive change, such as teaching digital literacy skills, to mentoring youth, to stocking food banks, to beautifying parks, Comcast NBCUniversal employees volunteer during this celebration and throughout the year to make a lasting impact. To date, more than 1 million Comcast Cares Day volunteers have contributed over 6 million service hours to improve local communities at more than 10,000 projects. This year, the Company expects more than 100,000 volunteers from Comcast, NBCUniversal, and for the first time Sky, to participate in projects across the country and around the world.

This year, volunteers will manage projects at numerous community organizations in California, including:

  • Paradise
Paradise High School: Hundreds of volunteers will revitalize the campus to prepare for the first graduation ceremony since the devastating Camp Fire and for the students to return for the next school year in the fall.
  • Fresno
West Fresno Elementary School (WFES): WFES staff and students will join Comcast volunteers to complete multiple campus beautification projects such as planting trees and flowers, painting the black-top, minor repairs and more. WFES serves over 750 students and staff on a daily basis. The goal of this project is to create a more welcoming environment for the entire WFES community.
  • Fremont
Harvey Green Elementary School: At Green, 400 students represent 30 nationalities and 16 languages. During Comcast Cares Day, volunteers will paint the kindergarten area, clean gardens, paint planters and create a mural in partnership with the Rotary Club.
  • Modesto
Modesto Gospel Mission: The Modesto Gospel Mission provides nutritious meals, warm beds, and a place of safety to thousands of poor and homeless men, women and children. More than 200 Comcast volunteers will work on a variety of projects ranging from building bookshelves and improving the basketball court to planting flowers, building gardens, cleaning, painting, repairing swing sets and refurbishing the play-area’s sandbox.
  • Oakland
Ralph J. Bunche Academy: This hospitality, tourism and recreation institution will receive a makeover as hundreds of volunteers gather to revitalize the basketball courts, paint the facilities, pull weeds and plant gardens.
  • San Jose
Sylvandale Middle School: Volunteers will assemble shelves for donating clothing and hygiene kits for homeless students, paint the playground and clean gardens and classrooms.
  • Santa Rosa
Lattice Educational Services: At this school for children with developmental disabilities, volunteers will conduct a range of projects including painting a mural on an entry wall and replacing fluorescent light covers with decorative covers (since some students have light sensitivities). Volunteers will also help with landscaping, gardening, cleaning, painting and overall beautification projects.
  • San Francisco
Buchanan Street Mall: Bordering the Rosa Parks Senior Center and the Ella Hutch Community Center, Buchanan Street Mall is a six-block landscaped greenway dotted with play structures and benches that provides an escape from city streets. Volunteers will paint basketball courts, clean, refurbish, landscape and paint a mural at the Rosa Parks Senior Center.

“As we celebrate the 18th annual Comcast Cares Day, we are delighted to partner with Operation Gratitude to bring the magic of Comcast Cares Day from California to our troops,” said John Gauder, Regional Vice President of Comcast California. “It is incredible to see how we can drive meaningful change by bringing together our employees, their friends and families, and our community partners on Comcast Cares Day and throughout the year. We are thankful for the participants and volunteers who continue to work to make a lasting, positive difference.”

The Comcast NBCUniversal Foundation will also provide grants to local partner organizations on behalf of volunteers who contribute their time on Comcast Cares Day. The grants will help Comcast’s partners continue their mission of serving the community throughout the year. To date, the Comcast NBCUniversal Foundation has awarded nearly $25 million in grants to local nonprofit organizations who have served as partners on Comcast Cares Day.
