BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Last Hope K9 Rescue (LHK9), New England’s largest entirely volunteer-run, foster-based non-profit dog rescue announced it will be sending 65 Massachusetts-based volunteers to Central Arkansas later this month. LHK9 partners with several shelters to rescue dogs that are then transported, cared for, and rehomed to adopters in New England. Like many states in the South and Midwest, Arkansas has a devastatingly high number of stray and abandoned dogs. Volunteers will help with everyday tasks at the shelters, such as kennel maintenance and cleaning, along with a variety of special projects to improve the dogs’ living conditions.
“This annual service trip is so important to our dogs and especially to our volunteers – it’s a major highlight of the year for LHK9,” said Lauren Fopiano, Assistant Director of Marketing & PR. “It serves as a special opportunity for our Northern and Southern counterparts to get together and work side by side in order to create the best living environment possible for these shelter dogs.”
From April 24-29, 2019, volunteers will be hosted by 18 families, and travel more than 7,000 miles over the course of the six days to work with the shelters and homeless dogs that are being temporarily housed there. The volunteers will be visiting shelters in Arkansas, including the Hazen, Pine Bluff, Monticello, Stuttgart, Bald Knob, West Memphis, Warren, Kensett, Jackson County and Camden shelters.
“Our volunteers have covered the cost of their own flights and are staying with some of our southern foster partners. We fundraise to cover the cost of the projects to be done – and more,” said Steph Phenix, Assistant Director of Medical, Adoptions & Intake. “After discussing each shelter’s needs, our estimated project costs are $55,000. To date, we have raised over $60,000. All funds raised in excess of our fundraising goal will go toward additional project requests from shelters and the care of other LHK9 dogs.”
LHK9 is proud to be working alongside these shelters in Arkansas to help significantly lower the number of dogs euthanized each year.
