CINCINNATI--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Simone Jonker (born 1957), daughter of the famous South African poet Ingrid Jonker (1933-1965), shares her life journey with the global storytelling platform, Our Life Logs™. Initiated by Blue Loop LLC in 2017 in Cincinnati, Ohio, Our Life Logs™ inspires its community by capturing true-life stories from all over the world. So far, it has shared 300+ stories from 40+ countries.
In her story, Simone begins with a brief history of her mother. Often referred to as the South African Sylvia Plath, Ingrid was an iconic poet of her time. Her works have been widely translated into other languages. Her poem “The Child (Who Was Shot Dead by Soldiers at Nyanga)” was cited by President Nelson Mandela during his opening address in 1994. The film Black Butterflies (2011) was released depicting Ingrid’s life.
Ingrid killed herself by drowning in the sea when Simone was only seven. Simone recalls the day her mother died,
I later learned that my mother left the small bachelor flat while I was asleep. She crossed the road outside and walked into the Atlantic Ocean. Her body was found the next morning, washed out on the shore. Her black coat was pulled over her head, tiny seashells gracing her ears…
This childhood trauma eventually led Simone down the path to drugs and self-destruction until she discovered Falun Gong, a type of Chinese yoga that encourages compassion.
