The annual IHI Patient Safety Congress reflects the health care industry’s ongoing attention to the safety of patients and the workforce as a core component of high-quality health care. As health care delivery extends beyond hospitals to outpatient settings, long-term care facilities, and the home, this meeting offers one of the most comprehensive and practical ways to learn about best safety practices across the care continuum, new staffing models, and how to build on the work of exemplar organizations. Recognized by the health care industry as a must-attend event for those seeking to provide smarter, safer care, the 2019 IHI Patient Safety Congress offers solutions to timely challenges for the field, such as reshaping mental health care for youth, achieving greater levels of patient engagement, improving perinatal outcomes, and minimizing the use of opioids for pain management.

CONFERENCE HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Thought-provoking keynote presentations from J.R. Martinez, a retired US Army Veteran, actor, and New York Times best-selling author of Full of Heart: My Story of Survival, Strength, and Spirit; Jennifer Arnold, MD, Medical Director, Center for Medical Simulation and Innovative Education, Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital, who is also known for her appearance with her family on the TLC television program, The Little Couple; Derek Feeley, President and CEO, IHI, who will lead a keynote session on safety culture featuring Gary Kaplan, MD, Chairman and CEO of Virginia Mason Health System, and Patti Harvey, RN, CPHQ, Senior Vice President, Quality, Regulatory, Clinical Operations Support, Kaiser Permanente; and Trey Coffey, MD, staff pediatrician and Medical Officer for Patient Safety, The Hospital for Sick Children, and Associate Clinical Director, Children’s Hospitals Solutions for Patient Safety, who will discuss “Hot Topics” in patient safety research over the past year.
  • Four full-day, hands-on immersion workshops, focusing on pain management as a patient safety issue; human factors and safe systems; implementing and sustaining high-reliability principles in health care; and preparing for the Certified Professional in Patient Safety credential.
  • 30 general conference workshops organized into six topic tracks:
    • Advancing Safety Science
    • Ambulatory and Care Outside the Hospital
    • Culture of Safety
    • Learning Systems
