MEMPHIS, Tenn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--This year marks the 200th birthday of the city of Memphis, and in celebration, ServiceMaster, a leading provider of pest control, cleaning and restoration services, will mark the momentous occasion with a day of community service to give back to a city that has given so much.
An estimated 350 ServiceMaster employees will complete simultaneous beautification projects at four Shelby County School campuses, including landscaping, painting, and other cleanup efforts as part of our overall commitment of caring about the communities where we live and work.
“Spring Clean ’19 will be a day for us to not only celebrate our city’s rich past, but also focus on creating cleaner, safer and healthier spaces,” said Nik Varty ServiceMaster CEO. “I’m so proud of our employees that are contributing to this important day. Our youth deserve environments they can enjoy and those that foster greater learning, and it is important for local companies to find ways to better serve, care and deliver them.”
In partnership with Shelby County Schools, Clean Memphis and APS Facility Maintenance, the projects were selected to help enhance the overall learning environment for students. The campuses are Ida B. Wells Academy, Kirby High School, Booker T. Washington High School and Riverview Middle School.
“By focusing on these needed beautification projects, we want students coming to school to feel a greater sense of pride, to stay positive and eager, and to excel as students so they can grow into the future leaders of our great community,” said Velvet Graham, senior director of Community Relations and Culture & Inclusion.
“We’re so thankful to ServiceMaster and the hundreds of employees who will be supporting our schools through their Spring Clean Project. It’s always inspiring to see businesses invest in the local community, and we’re excited about the impact these improvements will have on our students, teachers and families. We’re proud to be involved in this effort to make our city better,” said Dr. John Barker, SCS Chief of Staff.

About Shelby County Schools
Shelby County Schools (SCS) is Tennessee’s largest public school district and is among the 25 largest public school districts in the United States. Formerly comprised of two smaller districts, Memphis City Schools and Shelby County Schools, SCS serves over 100,000 students in more than 200 schools. We are the second largest employer in Shelby County with over 15,000 employees, including 6,600 teachers. Through our strategic plan, Destination 2025, we are committed to working toward three goals: 80 percent of students are college or career ready, 90 percent of seniors graduate on time and 100 percent of graduates will enroll in a post-secondary opportunity. To reach these goals, SCS has placed a strong emphasis in five high-leverage areas: early literacy, improvement of post-secondary readiness, developing strong teachers, leaders and support staff, expanding high quality school options and working closely with families and community partners to support our schools. SCS partners with almost 4,000 volunteers and 1,300 total school adopters and community partners to help impact student achievement.
