IBD Announces Fourth Annual Best Mutual Funds Award Winners

LOS ANGELES--()--Investor’s Business Daily (IBD), a leading financial news and research organization, today announced the results of its fourth annual Best Mutual Funds Awards. Funds named to the prestigious list were selected because they have beaten the broad market over the past one, three, five and 10 years -- an incredibly rare and difficult achievement.

“After enduring a somewhat turbulent year, 2019’s award winners showed resilience when needed. They have also performed with consistency over time, outperforming benchmark indexes in both the recent past and over the long term,” said Susan Warfel, managing editor of IBD. “The funds making the list could be considered the Best of the Best. They should be proud of their superior performance, and we heartily congratulate this year’s winners.”

The 2019 award winners were drawn from a universe of 2,852 mutual funds that met the criteria of having at least $100 million in assets and 10 years of operation. Only 357 funds beat their performance benchmark across all four periods evaluated, compared to 627 for the 2018 list. Breaking it down further, of the 1,076 U.S. diversified stock mutual funds in business for the entire decade, only 111 outperformed the S&P 500 index at the one-, three-, five- and 10-year marks.

The awards span 13 categories, which include six subcategories of U.S. Diversified Stock Funds, the largest category. Those subcategories are Growth Funds, Blend Funds, Value Funds, Large-Cap Funds, Midcap Funds and Small-Cap Funds.

Other categories are Sector Funds, International Stock Funds, U.S. Taxable Bond Funds, International Bond Funds, Municipal Bond Funds, and the new Index Funds category. As in 2018, no value funds made the 2019 list.

The funds are ranked according to their 10-year performance.

The same five mutual funds led both the U.S. Diversified Stock category and the Growth subcategory.
