Packet Announces Edge Access Program to Accelerate Use Cases

Open source, industry and commercial partners to take advantage of edge computing building blocks

NEW YORK--()--Packet, the leading bare metal automation platform for developers, today announced the availability of two edge sites in Chicago in partnership with Vapor IO. The new locations—along with a site separately deployed near Gillette Stadium in Foxborough (MA)—are the first of 15 locations to be launched in 2019.

Packet is also launching an Edge Access Program that provides both commercial and open source users with free access to edge computing building blocks. The program will function on a rolling basis and feature stock bare metal configurations targeted at both cloud native and telco deployments. Customized infrastructure can be deployed on a case-per-case basis.

Initial program participants include Catchpoint, DNSFilter, Federated Wireless, Fly.io, Hatch, Macrometa, MobiledgeX, Mutable, Nodeweaver, OpenNebula, Ori, Oort, Rafay Systems, Section.io, Travelping, VMware, and Volterra.

“The edge computing ecosystem is evolving quickly, and our goal with the Edge Access Program is to accelerate that momentum while simultaneously working with partners to solve the very real challenges that exist,” said Zachary Smith, Packet CEO. “By combining cloud native bare metal infrastructure and wireless connectivity at the edge with unique real estate, capital, technology and software partners, we are providing a compelling real-world laboratory to foster innovation.”

Packet is widely known for its developer-friendly cloud, which is available in 18 global locations and supports over 60k bare metal installs each month. Packet’s combination of flexible bare metal automation focus on subscale “go anywhere” deployments and carrier-grade networking has positioned it at the center of the edge computing conversation.

“Packet is a gateway to one of the most important resources for the edge...cloud developers who are excited to innovate up and down the entire stack,” noted Iyad Tarazi, CEO at Federated Wireless. “With the Edge Access Program and our partnership with Packet, we’re able to invite developers into the wireless stack for the first time.”

With today’s announcement, Vapor IO and Packet expand upon their existing partnership, which includes the Kinetic Edge Alliance (KEA), a powerhouse group of leading edge computing companies committed to rolling out hardware and software across a nationwide network of edge locations.

“The Kinetic Edge Alliance and our partnership with Packet will accelerate the creation and deployment of new edge applications,” says Cole Crawford, Founder & CEO of Vapor IO. “Packet’s bare metal approach to cloud is a perfect match for edge computing. Their Edge Access Program provides the best way for developers to explore edge computing and build real world applications for the edge.”
