Swagbucks Holiday Survey: Half of Americans Will Make a New Year’s Resolution — and They Might Actually Keep It!

New Swagbucks Survey Revealed Americans’ Top New Year’s Resolutions and How Long They Say They Will Try to Keep Them

LOS ANGELES--()--New Year’s resolutions: love ‘em or hate ‘em? According to a new survey by Swagbucks, a rewards- and loyalty-program company operated by Prodege, LLC, Americans are split on their commitment to New Year’s resolutions, with half planning to make one this year and the other half not.

The national survey of 1,000 U.S. adults was conducted online by Prodege in November 2018.

Top Goals: Losing and Saving

The survey discovered that more women (51 percent) than men (46 percent) plan to make a New Year’s resolution. Personal health is a top focus for Americans this year — a full third hope to lose weight or work out more and 3 of the top 4 resolutions concern health (the 4th, not surprisingly, concerns saving more money):

Top New Year’s Resolutions       Women       Men
Lose weight and/or work out more       35 percent       26 percent
Save more money       26 percent       21 percent
Eat healthier       26 percent       19 percent
Drink more water       20 percent       10 percent

Ever the optimists, over half of Americans also believe they’ll actually keep their resolutions this year, with a quarter anticipating their willpower lasting for the whole year and a third hoping to stay on track beyond 2019.

And they might be right. When asked if they kept their New Year’s resolutions in the past, 42 percent said that they have. Of those, 74 percent stuck with it for at least six months and 39 percent made it the whole year.

Perhaps the high rate of success reflects realistic goal-setting: Approximately 53 percent of Americans make three or fewer resolutions; 29 percent make only one.

Saving Up For an Emergency

Another top resolution for Americans in 2019 is to save money — in fact, a quarter of Americans say this is their top goal.

A full quarter are trying to build up their emergency fund, 22 percent are saving for retirement, another 21 percent want to save up for a vacation, and 12 percent are saving for a house.

The survey also found that Americans will employ a variety of tactics to save money, including:

  • Using a cash back shopping site when shopping online (42 percent)
  • Cutting back on eating out (33 percent)
  • Staying home more instead of going out (25 percent)

However, in keeping with their fitness goals, only 1 percent say they will be giving up their gym membership to save money.

“We’re excited to see that so many Americans plan to make healthier choices in their physical and financial lifestyle,” said Chuck Davis, CEO and Chairman of Prodege, LLC. “Swagbucks is here to help them keep their New Year’s resolutions by providing cash back and rewards on all purchases they make, including reusable water bottles, bathroom scales and home exercise equipment. Maybe even enough to pay for that vacation many people are saving for!”

Holiday shoppers and New Year’s resolution keepers can earn Swagbucks on all their purchases from a wide selection of popular retailers through the Swagbucks site or by downloading the SwagButton.
