LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--In a resounding victory for animal rights, the Animal Hope and Wellness Sponsored “Dog and Cat Meat Prohibition Act” passes both the United States House of Representatives and the Senate in the 2018 Farm Bill. It is now illegal to slaughter dogs and cats for human consumption, a practice still legal in 44 states.
While this seldom happens here in America, it still occurs with a number of multiple recent cases discovered in Hawaii, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and New York. Many of these dogs and cats were taken from shelters, some found as strays, other stolen pets from families.
The Dog and Cat Meat Trade Prohibition Act which was first introduced in March 2017 by Congressman Alcee Hastings (D-FL). The AHWF has lobbied for The Dog and Cat Meat Prohibition Act, knowing that the United States cannot condemn the practice around the world if it is still legally permissible within its own borders.
