CHICAGO--()--The holidays can be a daunting time for many, with so many events, picking out clothes is often the last thing men think about. “Men just don’t naturally think about it the way women do,” says Jason Hammerberg, founder of Hammer Made. “Women have a natural instinct for this kind of thing, whereas many men don’t seem to care.”

Holidays are the best time of the year to impress, and what easier way to do so than through clothes. “With the sheer number of events going on, it’s the perfect time of the year for men to make a good impression. It’s a time of the year where you can also feel good dressing up as a couple. You’re already at the mall buying presents for everyone else, kill two birds with one stone and shop for yourself as well,” says Hammerberg.

Hammer Made recently conducted a survey of more than 400 men who said the number one reason for failing to dress to impress is their lack of confidence. With so many trends and options, men who don’t know how to put outfits together can feel a lack of confidence and would rather just stay home than having to go through all the trouble of finding a new outfit. In fact, 56 percent of respondents claimed this to be the number one reason why this time of the year is a struggle for them.

“Lack of knowledge is really the thing that makes shopping difficult, but it doesn’t have to be. Men think that building a good wardrobe is a production, it’s really not. You don’t have to know all the latest fashion trends, just one or two.” Hammerberg has a few tips to help men this season. “Follow these simple tips and you’ll wow everyone in the room.”

  • Layering is key! Not only does it keep you warm, but it can also help in situations where you’re not sure what the dress code is. Throw on a sportscoat over a quarter zip knit and a woven piece and you have the perfect outfit. You can always take off the sportscoat if it’s more casual or keep it on for a more formal look.
  • If you don’t like pulling pieces over your head, try a full-zip knit. There are so many options, try different styles until you find the one you like.
  • Play around with seasonal colors – moss green is hot, but not everything needs to be earth tones. Blue, green and purples can provide a cool tone and look.
  • Don’t like to play with color? Your outfit doesn’t have to be bright to impress, have fun by mixing different patterns and textures.
  • It’s all about the statement sweater – unless it’s an ugly Christmas sweater party, ditch the ugly sweater!
  • It’s the small details. Have fun by adding small details to your outfit such as a fun sock or pocket square. You never know if the party will be a shoes-off casual get together, or something more formal. You can always push the pocket square in if you’re feeling overdressed. And a fun sock can make a great conversation starter!
  • New Year’s Eve is the best time to wear a statement piece, try one in a wow color or pattern. It’s the beginning of the year, time to try something new and if it didn’t work out, leave it in the past.
  • Try fun cufflinks with our convertible cuffs. Cuff links are small and subtle, but they’re a great way to add a pop of color or texture.

“I like to experiment, see what works out. An easy way to do that is to lay the key pieces of the outfit down on the bed (Blazer and denim) and then rotate out a few shirts, pocket squares, socks, etc. See what things work together - you can even impress her by laying your outfit next to hers to complement what she is wearing and get her thoughts... bonus points."
