Federal & State Elected Officials Across California Endorse Proposition 10 as Key Step to Addressing Housing Affordability Crisis

LOS ANGELES--()--Today, the Yes on 10 campaign proudly announces the endorsement of federal and state elected officials from across California. The partial list includes several powerful leaders in the legislature and Democratic Party: past Senate President Pro Tem Kevin De León, Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones, candidate for Insurance Commissioner Senator Ricardo Lara, candidate for Superintendent of Public Instruction Assemblymember Tony Thurmond, and Assembly Housing Committee Chair David Chiu.

“These leaders and public servants who represent people from Northern California to San Diego join a broad coalition of trusted organizations and advocates -- from the League of Women Voters and ACLU, to the California Democratic Party to the California Teachers and Nurses Associations, to the Los Angeles Times and Sacramento Bee -- that are all urging Californians to vote YES on Proposition 10,” said Yes on 10 lead strategist Joe Trippi.

WHAT THEY’RE SAYING:

Congresswoman Barbara Lee (CA-13, Oakland): “From sky-high rents forcing thousands of families to relocate out of state, to the fact that California has the highest rate of homelessness in the nation, our housing affordability crisis is the most urgent crisis facing our state. I strongly support Proposition 10 because local communities know best when it comes to addressing the housing concerns of their people. We must use every tool at our disposal to protect renters, guarantee property owners a fair rate of return, and make our communities stronger and more viable for homeowners, tenants and all Californians to enjoy and thrive. Everyone deserves a safe and affordable place to call home.”

State Senator Kevin De León (SD-24, Los Angeles): “I am fighting for a better life for everyone across our great state, and that includes providing a solution to the affordable housing and homeless crises. That is why I’m supporting Proposition 10. It will provide the tools to empower local communities up and down the state to decide how to limit skyrocketing rent increases based on their unique housing needs. As I criss-cross the state in my race for US Senate, I have seen firsthand the devastating impact high rents have had on nurses, teachers, seniors, and hard-working Californians. Prop 10 will help secure affordable housing for all California families.”

Assembly Housing Committee Chair David Chiu (AD-17, San Francisco): “Renters in California are facing unprecedented hardships during our state’s housing crisis, and they need relief. Proposition 10 gives local jurisdictions the flexibility to decide how to best to address rising rents in their own communities. We tried to address this issue in the legislature, but unfortunately, strong opposition made change impossible. I support Prop 10 to ease the burden on renters across the state.”

Proposition 10 is a key step towards solving California’s housing-affordability and homelessness crises because it will protect California’s renters and guarantee landlords a fair rate of return, all while laying the foundation for stronger communities. By empowering local communities to limit rent increases and curtail predatory housing practices, cities and counties will be able to create thoughtful laws to address their local housing situations.
