O’Melveny, Apollo, FedEx Freight, and KKR donated the backpacks and school supplies, which include notebooks, pencils, pens, colored pencils, pencil cases, erasers, sharpeners, and rulers. Employees of the portfolio companies of Apollo, Blackstone, KKR, and The Carlyle Group as well as personnel from O’Melveny and Hiring Our Heroes will fill 1,000 backpacks with school supplies for children in Afghanistan during this interactive service project.
During the past decade, the organizations involved have supported veterans by helping spur employment opportunities for veterans and military spouses in the United States. Following conversations with retired and active members of the United States military, including KKR’s General (Ret.) David H. Petraeus, about their on-the-ground experiences and observations in Afghanistan, this group recognized the potential for collaboration to make a difference in children’s lives. Donating backpacks and school supplies enables children in Afghanistan, many of whom are orphans, to attend school, which is not possible for those who do not have their own school supplies. This effort also builds tremendous goodwill with the children and families in the region with whom our troops are hoping to create a sense of community.
The 2018 Veterans Initiative Summit, which builds on the momentum of past events, is designed to support the recruitment, hiring, retention, and promotion of American veterans across private equity portfolio companies. The private equity industry represents hundreds of companies and millions of employees through its work across industries and geographies. The collective impact of these businesses is enormous, and together they have the potential to create significant opportunity for veterans and military spouses.
