ILÚM Health Solutions to Present Data from the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania on Implementation of an Electronic Antimicrobial Prior Authorization Approval Process at ID Week 2018

Electronic antimicrobial prior authorization approval process provides 24/7 resource for antibiotic stewardship program (ASP)

KENILWORTH, N.J.--()--ILÚM Health Solutions, a provider of technology and services to support infectious disease management, today announced that data demonstrating the implementation and evaluation of its electronic antimicrobial prior authorization (PA) approval process at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, will be presented at ID Week 2018, to be held October 3-7 in San Francisco.

Prior authorization of antimicrobial agents is recommended by the CDC as a broad antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) intervention and has been a cornerstone of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP) AMS program since its inception. Hospitals utilizing prior authorization require providers to obtain approval from the AMS team prior to prescribing specific restricted antimicrobials. The PA approval process may reduce initiation of inappropriate or unnecessary antimicrobial agents while also serving to educate providers at prime decision-making moments and inform future treatment choices; however, securing AMS team approval can be a cumbersome process that can delay appropriate treatment.

“Effectively managing patients with infectious diseases requires rapidly getting the right information to the right people to optimize decision-making,” said Brandon Palermo, MD, ILÚM chief medical officer. “We look forward to sharing data that demonstrates how ILÚM’s technologies can transform critical use processes, support antibiotic stewardship at the point-of-care, enable efficiencies in terms of time, and most importantly, improve the quality of care provided to patients.”

“Calling the ID approval pager, waiting for a callback, discussing the case with the AMS team, and receiving approval or an alternative recommendation can be a challenging process and for a very ill patient requires time that he or she may not have,” said Jimish M. Mehta, PharmD, ILÚM vice president of product. “For the first time, we have baseline data that provides insight into how a big university system integrated and enthusiastically adopted an electronic PA system. “
