Alcohol Safety Education Program Provided at No Cost for High School Students in Miami-Dade and Broward Counties

Educators can inspire students to make better choices about alcohol safety during the 2018-2019 school year

MIAMI & DALLAS--()--The Youth Alcohol Awareness and Education Foundation, Inc.—established by Southern Glazer’s Wine & Spirits to fund programs that support alcohol safety and underage drinking prevention—today announced its AlcoholEdu® for High School online curriculum is once again available for all public and private high schools in Miami-Dade and Broward counties for the 2018-2019 school year. The alcohol safety education initiative, funded by the Foundation in partnership with Step Up For Students, has already impacted nearly 1,600 students across 29 high schools in South Florida since the kickoff of the program in 2017. This is the second year the Youth Alcohol Awareness and Education Foundation has funded the program in South Florida.

The interactive digital program, developed by leading education technology company EVERFI, is proven to reduce negative consequences associated with underage drinking. Topics covered include, peer pressure, effects of alcohol on the brain and body, bystander behavior, and goal-setting. Through pre- and post-course assessments and surveys, students are measured on knowledge gains as well as shifts in behavior, attitudes, and habits around alcohol safety. Those assessment and survey results are compared against EVERFI’s national survey population of over 59,000 students from the 2017-2018 school year.

After completing the course, participating students in South Florida showed significant knowledge gains of 34%, along with corresponding positive shifts in attitudes and behaviors. Some students who took the course shared the following feedback:

  • “I learned to not only take care of myself, but also of others around me.” – Student, Miami, FL
  • “Although I had prior understanding of a significant portion of the topics addressed by the program, AlcoholEdu® addressed my concerns and developed my understanding pertaining to the consumption habits of other individuals.” – Student, Weston, FL
  • “I learned different facts about how many people in college actually drink. In movies, it makes it seem like college students drink all the time. The course had surprising statistics.” – Student, Parkland, FL

AlcoholEdu® for High School is a 1.5 hour, interactive course that engages students with science-based alcohol education and interactive exercises, providing an individualized experience that changes perceptions, motivates behavior change, and supports healthier decisions regarding alcohol. EVERFI’s AlcoholEdu® for High School is made available to public and private schools in Miami-Dade and Broward Counties at no cost to educators thanks to the support of grants from The Youth Alcohol Awareness and Education Foundation, Inc.

Teachers, guidance counselors, and school administrators in Miami-Dade and Broward counties who are interested in implementing this program for the 2018 - 2019 school year should contact EVERFI Implementation Manager, Emily Moloney at emoloney@everfi.com.
