Pikes Peak Online School Welcomes Students for 2018-19 School Year

Students Return to Online Public School on September 4

WESTMINSTER, Colo.--()--Students at Pikes Peak Online School (PPOS), an accredited online public school, will begin their 2018-19 school year on September 4, simply by turning on their computers. PPOS provides high school students across the state with the opportunity to get back on track academically in the distraction-free environment of their own home.

PPOS is public school at home, offering families and students an alternative to traditional brick-and-mortar education. Students attending PPOS come from diverse backgrounds, many of them struggling in a traditional classroom before finding PPOS. The online school combines innovative technology with an engaging curriculum led by state-certified teachers to provide each student with a personalized learning experience.

The school’s comprehensive education approach focuses on providing struggling students in grades 9-12 with the academic, social and emotional support needed to reach graduation. Using a combination of web-based lessons and support from dedicated teachers and counselors, PPOS creates a unique education experience for each student that helps to pave the way for their success after high school. In the event that a student is deficient in course credit, the school’s extensive credit recovery courses allow a student to get back on track for a successful graduation.

Students take benchmark assessments at the beginning of the school year to identify strengths and challenges, and the results are used to develop an individually tailored learning plan for each student. For many, this Individualized Learning Plan (ILP) expands beyond current academic objectives to include post-secondary goals for college or a career.

Additionally, the online curriculum is bolstered by a Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) program, as well as a family support team to help students achieve success both academically and personally. Moreover, the school’s blended learning option combines online learning with face-to-face instruction and support, giving students the opportunity to meet and engage with their teachers and classmates in person in addition to the online classroom.

“Pikes Peak has so much to offer my daughter,” said Dalila Armijo, whose daughter, Sally, has a serious heart condition and is a rising junior at PPOS. “She can be in the hospital and go to class, and she receives incredible support from her teachers. The online setting also allows me to be deeply involved in her education as her learning coach.”

Through live and recorded class sessions that are accessed online, students and their teachers can engage and interact as if they were sitting together in a traditional classroom. The state-certified teachers at PPOS facilitate lessons during live, interactive online classes. In addition, the dedicated teachers interact with students and parents via phone, email, web-based classrooms and online discussions, building close partnerships with parents and students to support academic success and ensure families feel supported.

PPOS also gives students the opportunity to earn college credit while still in high school through concurrent enrollment, which is available in partnership with local colleges.

Students who are severely credit deficient and will not be able to graduate high school by the time they are 21 years old can choose to enroll in the school’s tuition-free GED prep program. PPOS partners with USA Test Prep to provide GED support in language arts, math, science and social studies.

Throughout the school year, PPOS builds a sense of community through in-person field trips, social outings and service learning opportunities. PPOS celebrates the end of the school year with an in-person prom and honors graduating seniors with an in-person commencement ceremony in the spring. Virtual clubs and student organizations also allow students to further explore their interests together in the online setting.

PPOS is still accepting enrollments for this fall. Interested families are encouraged to attend information sessions hosted by the school. To learn more, visit ppos.k12.com or download the K12 enrollment app for iOS and Android devices.
