MedRisk’s Mary O’Donoghue Will Moderate “When Good Shoulders Go Bad” Session at CWC Risk

DANA POINT, Calif.--()--Shoulder pain is one the most common musculoskeletal problems in workers’ compensation, second only to low back pain. In fact, it is even more prevalent in some industries. The number of rotator cuff surgeries has increased over the past two decades, despite the fact that over 50 percent of rotator cuff patients improve significantly without surgery.

MedRisk’s Mary O’Donoghue will moderate a session on diagnosing and treating rotator cuff issues at the California Workers Compensation Risk Conference (CWC Risk). “When Good Shoulders Go Bad: A Step-by-Step Guide to Better Outcomes,” will be presented by Kathryn Mueller, MD, MPH, FACOEM, Professor, University of Colorado Schools of Medicine and Public Health, and Angela DeBortoli, Program Manager of Workers’ Compensation at the University of California. Discussion points include symptoms, surgical indications, recent research, and guidelines for evidence-based treatment.

“Many physicians and researchers now believe that conservative care including exercise, should be the first approach,” O’Donoghue said. “One study by Kuhn showed that six weeks after first participating in an exercise-based physical therapy program, fewer than 10 percent of patients with atraumatic rotator cuff injuries required surgery.”

The session will start at 10:35 a.m. on September 6. CWC Risk will take place at the Monarch Beach Resort in Dana Point, California September 5-7. For more information, please see http://www.cwcriskconference.org.
