Healthgrades Announces Recipients of 2018 Women's Care Awards

New report identifies top-quality hospitals for maternal care and provides guidance to make confident care decisions

DENVER--()--Healthgrades, the leading online resource for comprehensive information about physicians and hospitals, today announced the 2018 Women’s Care Award recipients. The 2018 Gynecologic Surgery Excellence Award™, the 2018 Labor and Delivery Excellence Award™ and the 2018 Obstetrics and Gynecology Excellence Award™ recognize exceptional hospitals across the country that have demonstrated superior outcomes in women’s healthcare services.

In conjunction with the release of the 2018 Women’s Care Awards, Healthgrades also published a related report that discusses three key factors that affect a woman’s care journey, including how women make decisions about care, how hospitals can inform and empower women in their care journey and how health systems can achieve the best outcomes and optimal patient experience.

“Since the woman’s care journey encompasses many years and consequential experiences, it’s critical that patients feel empowered to make decisions and know the facts before making a physician and hospital selection,” said Brad Bowman, MD, Chief Medical Officer at Healthgrades. “By researching hospital quality on Healthgrades.com, patients can review important outcomes data and access transparent information to guide their care decisions.”

To help consumers evaluate and compare hospital performance, Healthgrades analyzed patient outcome data for all patients (all-payer data) made available in 15 states and the District of Columbia from 2014 through 2016.** The data were used to identify the highest performing hospitals in women’s health, and it revealed variations in quality between hospitals that received the Healthgrades awards and those that didn’t.

Healthgrades 2018 Gynecologic Surgery Excellence Award

This award recognizes the top 10 percent of hospitals evaluated that provided outstanding performance in gynecologic surgery, including hysterectomy and surgery related to the female reproductive system. Healthgrades evaluated 676 eligible hospitals across 15 states and the District of Columbia and awarded 68 hospitals the 2018 Gynecologic Surgery Excellence Award. The evaluation found that:

From 2014 through 2016, patients treated in hospitals receiving the 2018 Gynecologic Surgery Excellence Award had, on average, a 46.3 percent lower risk of experiencing a complication while in the hospital than if they were treated in hospitals that did not receive the award.*

From 2014 through 2016, if all hospitals in the analysis performed similarly to those receiving the 2018 Gynecologic Surgery Excellence Award, complications could have potentially been avoided for 12,637 patients.*

Healthgrades 2018 Labor and Delivery Excellence Award

This distinction recognizes the top 10 percent of all hospitals evaluated for the exceptional care provided to mothers during labor and delivery. Healthgrades evaluated 1,043 eligible hospitals across 15 states and the District of Columbia and awarded 106 hospitals the 2018 Labor and Delivery Excellence Award. The evaluation found that:

From 2014 through 2016, if all hospitals included in the evaluation performed similarly to those that received the 2018 Labor and Delivery Excellence Award, complications could have potentially been avoided for 101,543 patients.*

From 2014 through 2016, patients treated in hospitals receiving the 2018 Labor and Delivery Excellence Award had, on average, a 36.8 percent lower risk of experiencing a complication while in the hospital than if they were treated in hospitals that did not receive the award.*

Healthgrades 2018 Obstetrics and Gynecology Excellence Award

This award highlights hospitals for exceptional clinical outcomes while caring for women in childbirth, as well as during and after gynecologic surgeries and procedures. Healthgrades evaluated 614 eligible hospitals across 15 states and the District of Columbia and awarded 62 hospitals the 2018 Obstetrics and Gynecology Excellence Award. The evaluation found that:

From 2014 through 2016, if all hospitals in the evaluation performed similarly to those that received the 2018 Obstetrics and Gynecology Excellence Award, complications could have potentially been avoided for 116,145 patients.*

Additionally, from 2014 through 2016, patients treated in hospitals receiving the 2018 Obstetrics and Gynecology Excellence Award had, on average, a 32.8 percent lower risk of experiencing a complication while in the hospital than if they were treated in hospitals that did not receive the award.*
