CRANBURY, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--OncLive®’s Giants of Cancer Care® recognition program is proud to announce George D. Demetri, MD as the 2019-2020 Giants of Cancer Care® Advisory Board chair. Dr. Demetri, a 2014 inductee into the Giants program for Gastrointestinal Cancer and an advisory board member for the past 3 years, will oversee both the advisory board and nomination process. He will be taking over for Dr. Patrick Borgen, who remains a member of the board and is Director of the Brooklyn Breast Cancer Program at Maimonides Hospital. Dr. Borgen led this program to its success over the past two years with the expansion of both the advisory board and the selection committees, and helped lead the program to a larger international presence, allowing for an increased notoriety. Under his guidance in 2018, the program saw its largest class of nominees in its history.
“We are honored to have Dr. Demetri take over as our advisory board chair for the Giants of Cancer Care® recognition program. Dr. Demetri is one of the most well-respected oncologists in the world and we welcome him to our program as the chair,” said Michael J. Hennessy Jr, president of MJH Associates, parent company of OncLive®.
Dr. Demetri, a Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, is currently the Senior Vice President for Experimental Therapeutics at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Director of the Sarcoma Center at Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women’s Cancer Center, and Co-Director of the Ludwig Center at Harvard Medical School. His research and clinical interests have focused on mechanism-based drug development for solid tumors, with a particular emphasis on molecularly-defined subsets of sarcomas such as gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST). In addition, Dr. Demetri also serves as Chair of the Science Policy and Government Affairs Committee of the American Association for Cancer Research, as well as several scientific and editorial advisory boards.
“The intersecting work of our scientific, clinical and advocacy communities across the public and private sectors are creating extraordinary advances for patients and families affected by cancer. It is an honor for me to chair this program which aims to recognize the key contributions of individuals and teams that make such changes in practice possible. The Giants of Cancer Care® program will continue to evolve in concert with advances in many disease-focused areas and as well as in broader terms which impact the overall scope of cancer research, education and training, innovation in care delivery, and regulatory science of our field. We look forward to receiving nominations across all fields of cancer care so that the impact of deserving colleagues can be recognized by this program, ” noted George D. Demetri, MD on his new role as Chair.
