Ebates Mother’s Day Survey: A Quarter of Americans Forget Mother’s Day

Survey reveals that half of Americans think ‘pet moms’ should also be celebrated

SAN FRANCISCO--()--It turns out that forgetting Mother’s Day is quite common. According to new data from Ebates, a leader and pioneer in cash back shopping and subsidiary of the global internet services company Rakuten, almost a quarter of Americans (26 percent) admit to periodically forgetting it!

The Ebates Annual Mother’s Day Survey of more than 1,000 U.S. adults was conducted online by Propeller Insights on behalf of Ebates in April 2018.

Send Mom to the spa

This year, moms and their families don’t quite agree on gifts for Mother’s Day.

While family members think Mom wants flowers, more than a third (36 percent) aren’t actually sure what Mom's favorite flower is. Meanwhile, what Mom really wants most is a day at the spa:

What families think Mom wants:

What Mom really wants:

1. Flowers — 52 percent

1. Spa day — 46 percent

2. A card — 51 percent

2. A card — 40 percent

3. Jewelry — 23 percent

3. Flowers — 38 percent

4. Spa day — 16 percent

4. Breakfast in bed — 34 percent

However, both moms and their families agree on one thing this year: electronics are a no-no. Only 16 percent of moms want electronics and only 7 percent of families plan to buy them.

The survey also found that most Americans will purchase an individual gift (74 percent) over a joint gift (26 percent) and that half of Americans (52 percent) believe “pet moms” (women with pets) should be celebrated on Mother’s Day.

Better yet, take Mom to the spa

Would you consider taking a trip with Mom for Mother’s Day?

More than three-quarters (77 percent) of Americans would.

A spa day is the most popular trip Americans will be taking with Mom this year (34 percent), followed by a stay-cation (24 percent) and a cruise (22 percent). A minority of adventurous Americans (15 percent) will be taking Mom abroad.

“We commission this survey every year, and each year we get different results, but the common denominator is that Mother’s Day is an important day to celebrate the moms in your life,” said Amit Patel, CEO of Ebates. “With more than 2,500 retailers offering cash back, it’s easier than ever to get the perfect gift for mom: from a spa day to flowers to a vacation.”
