GASTONIA, N.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Books-A-Million invites guests to a conversation and book signing event with New York Times bestselling author and National Book Award winner Charles Frazier on Monday, April 23. This event, beginning at 7 p.m., will feature Frazier’s newest book “Varina” and will take place at Loray Mills, located at 300 South Firestone Street in Gastonia, North Carolina.
Set for release on April 3, Frazier’s historical fiction novel “Varina,” published by Ecco, revisits the perennially absorbing period in United States history when political and social divisiveness led to a catastrophic war. With limited prospects, teenage Varina makes a strategic decision to marry widower Jefferson Davis, a Mississippi landowner with the resources to offer a life of security. What she expects to be a relatively uncomplicated lifestyle quickly ruptures when Varina’s husband becomes the appointed president of the Confederacy, placing her at the white-hot center of the nation’s most turbulent era. Her marriage dissolving and the Confederacy falling, Varina and her children become fugitives as they escape south from Richmond. In this powerful tale of life after the American war, Frazier paints a portrait of a woman who realizes the harrowing consequences that accompany complicity.
Frazier gained international stardom with the release of his first novel, “Cold Mountain,” which became an international bestseller and was adapted as the Academy Award winning feature film of the same name starring Nicole Kidman and Jude Law. Frazier has since published two bestselling novels: “Thirteen Moons” and “Nightwoods.” The much anticipated “Varina” is expected to meet the caliber of Frazier’s former works with its epic scope and powerful delivery.
Director of Lincoln County Public Library Jennifer Sackett will join Frazier for the discussion and Q&A portion of the evening. To attend the event, guests must purchase an Eventbrite ticket in advance by visiting charlesfrazier.eventbrite.com. Each ticket will include a copy of Frazier’s new book “Varina,” as well as admittance to the conversation and Q&A.
