The Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS) is a tool used by more than 90 percent of America's health plans to measure performance on important dimensions of care and service. HEDIS consists of 81 measures plus certification of “systematic sampling” (4 of the 81 measures) across 6 domains (Effectiveness of Care, Access/Availability of Care, Experience of Care, Utilization and Risk Adjusted Utilization, Health Plan Descriptive Information, and Measures Collected Using Electronic Clinical Data Systems). HEDIS makes it possible to compare the performance of health plans.
