The top three segments based on type of the global alpha olefins market are discussed below:

Global alpha olefins market by 1-Hexene

The 1-Hexene segment holds the major share of the market. 1-Hexene is preferred over other types of alpha olefins because of its unique properties. It is used as a comonomer in the production of polyethylene and aldehydes. 1-Hexene is also used as an intermediate in the production of oxo alcohols, hexyl mercaptans, organoaluminum compounds, and synthetic fatty acids for plasticizers. It is used the maximum in polyethylene manufacturing and plasticizers. With the growth in the global plastic market during the forecast period, the demand for 1-Hexene is expected to increase.

Global alpha olefins market by 1-Butene

1-Butene is gaining momentum in the market after 1-Hexene. Alpha olefins of 1-Butene are polymerized to manufacture polybutene-1 (PB). It is a type of homopolymer that is majorly used in engineering applications. Its preference in engineering applications has increased over a period because of its excellent and long-term mechanical properties. It has a high tensile strength and good tear properties.

According to Kurva Samba Sivudu, a lead specialty chemicals research analyst from Technavio, “PB successfully resisted stress without cracking or fracturing when tested against its short-time stress value. It remained the same for a long period. Its applications have broadened in the commercial sector because of its unique features. This has accelerated the growth of the market.”

Global alpha olefins market by 1-Octene

1-Octene is an organic compound that is classified as a higher olefin and alpha olefin. Its chemical formula is CH2CHC6H13. It is majorly used as a comonomer in the production of polyethylene. With the rise in the demand for LLDPE and HDPE, the use of 1-Octene has also increased. LLDPE uses approximately 8%-12% of comonomers, and HDPE uses approximately 2%-5% of comonomers.

“There are around five to six processes that oligomerize ethylene into 1-Octene. The maximum number of processes produce 1-Octene as a part of alpha olefins. The importance of 1-Octene has increased because of its use in the production of linear aldehyde through oxo synthesis, resulting in the formation of fatty acid,” adds Kurva.

The top vendors highlighted by Technavio’s research analysts in this report are:

  • Chevron
  • Idemitsu Kosan
  • INEOS
  • SABIC
  • Shell
